News just in that Etihad bought a 30% stake in airberlin. So fingers crossed that Etihad itself will become a regular visitor to BER once the airport opens!

This can not be the case because UAE airlines have no landing rights in BER and there is no sign that this will change in the near future!

Really? I thought only Emirates was restricted (max 5 destinations in Germany, all of which are already taken up)

All UAE airlines are only allowed to fly to 4 german destinations! EK and EY, bot are UAE airlines. Emirates flies to 4 destinations, FRA, MUC, DUS, HAM! And as far as I know, these two airlines have to fly to the same destinations, so it is not possible for EY to fly to BER as long as EK flies to FRA, MUC, DUS, HAM. EY also has to fly to FRA, MUC, DUS, HAM

So Air Berlin has to fly to Abu Dhabi then as codeshare?

That is wrong! The bilateral agreement between VAE and Germany gives all VAE airlines the opportunity to serve the same three German airports (currently DUS, MUC and FRA). HAM for EK is an exception regulation and only for EK valid. If EY would like to fly to Berlin themselves, they could ask for an similar exception like EK did with HAM. But it is open if they would get the landing rights. Regurlaly they are allowed to serve three airports only.

Germany should do as much as possible to keep Emirates out. Right now they are flying DXB - VIE twice a day just to starve out OS.

Jobs being lost in my country? Those petrodollars funded airlines don't play by the same rules, as everyone else.
