Yes, I agree!!! No big deal - in the end, the airport will be a success. It's just super disappointing and an embarrasment to the airport operators (which reflects badly on Berlin and maybe on Germany as well to a degree), but the truth is, that once it DOES open, it will be something to marvel at. Anything compared to the current situation will be an improvement, so let's all look forward to the opening later this year hopefully (I'm betting it'll be Oct or Nov 2012!).

It's crazy how the reason for the delay went from a problem with the safety certification to a delay because some systems were not finished, not certified and not even working properly. (English Source)

Some managers must have known that things weren't going as good as what they had told the politicians, the airlines, the media and the public. I don't think that anyone can deny that this isn't a textbook example of complete mismanagement and miscommunication.

That's the worst case PR disaster possible.

OK, so now we have a serious delay and that I could consider shameful. Although, for Brazilian standards, that would be seen as normal and something to be expected.

Even for German standards a certain delay is normal, especially when new hightec, the fire safety system, is involved . The BER debacle is neither the delay nor the total time of construction (7 years). The outcry and the mediahype is more related to the highly anticipated opening, which is now postponed.

The disaster is that they make everyone believe the whole thing is basically finished and they will open as scheduled, just to completely overthrow the timetable little later.

I'll be there in August. I was really excited about experiencing a brand new airport, but now have to wait till next year.
