Škoda Transportation wins Konya tram contract
04 March 2013

TURKEY: Škoda Transportation announced a €104ˇ7m contract to supply 60 trams to Konya on March 4. The five-section air-conditioned Type 28T trams will be 100% low-floor bidirectional vehicles based on 31 trams ordered by Miskolc in Hungary.

Konya municipality is planning to expand the city's 21 km tram line, which is currently operated using trams acquired second-hand from Köln.

While Škoda Electric has previously supplied electrical equipment for light rail vehicles for Istanbul, the Czech firm said this is its first contract to supply complete trams to Turkey. The company beat rival bids from Bombardier, Pesa, CAF, Astra Arad and CNR Tangshan to win the contract.

'Škoda's win in this very competitive environment is another great step in confirming our strategy to expand internationally', said Zal Shahbaz, Senior Vice-President for Sales. 'We are very pleased for this win, as Turkey is a dynamic and fast-growing market, with major investments in urban transportation, in many other big cities such as Bursa, Gaziantep, Izmir or Adana. Turkey is also a gateway to other Middle East countries'.

I would have voted for #2. By the way are there local manufacturers for trains or trams?

Durmazlar actually

By the way, we're not absolutely happy with our CAF rolling stocks in M4.
Noise isolation is really bad, you have to shout in train to talk with someone.
It's the only problem but I think it's not minor.

Until this trains, I consider CAF as a superb manufacturer.

Konya orders trams for catenary-free operation
06 May 2014

TURKEY: Konya has ordered 12 trams capable of catenary-free operation from Škoda Transportation as a follow-on order for the 60 ForCity Classic 28T trams currently being delivered. They are to be delivered next year, and bring the total order value for 72 trams to KC3ˇ4bn.

Following certification in January, a prototype Catfree tram has been on test at Škoda’s Plzeň factory since February. Roof-mounted nano-lithium-titanium batteries enable catenary-free operation for up to 3 km, and are recharged through the pantograph.

‘The tram managed to accelerate 30 times to 30 km/h for a total of 8 km without recharging’, explained Milan Šrámek, Škoda Transportation’s Electric Product Manager.

The trams for Konya are to be used on a new line which will have a 1ˇ8 km section without overhead wires. The first 28T from the original order entered passenger service in February

Izmir seeks EBRD loan to fund metro train order
Wednesday, July 23, 2014

IZMIR Metropolitan Municipality, Turkey, is trying to obtain a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to fund the acquisition of additional light metro trains.

If the loan application is successful, Izmir plans to invite bids during the third quarter of this year for 17 five-car light metro trains worth Lira 447m ($US 208m). The city will issue technical assistance tenders for the development of key performance indicators, out-sourcing and development of non-fare revenue; policy; and project procurement and implementation.

Test running is underway on a 5.5km underground extension to the existing 16km light metro line from Göztepe via Poligon to Fahrettin Altay. The light metro currently runs from Evka 3 in the northeast of Izmir via the city centre to Göztepe in the west. Three more extensions are planned, and Izmir is also building two light rail lines totalling 27.3km.
