It is hard to give a good answer to that question, I had to think about it for a while. The neighborhood hasn't been St Anthony for a long time, and is an integral part of the city. On the other hand it has a lot in it that you don't see in other parts of the city. The old Main Street still exists. Downtown is starting to jump the river so there are some highrises in the area.

The neighborhood is located at falls of St Anthony which was the best waterpower site in the Midwest. When Minneapolis became the largest flour milling center in the world in the late 19th century half of that was in Northeast along the river, the other half is where downtown now is. Commercial districts grew up along the mills on both sides of the river. On the downtown side most of that is gone now and has been replaced by the modern downtown. On the Northeast side much of the old (and much smaller) commercial district is still intact. That is what I photograped here, also some of the old mills are still around. I will probably be taking photos of Main Street and the Pillsbury "A" Mill in the near future.

I took a lot of new photos yesterday so this will almost be like a photothread unto itself.

Normally when I take photos I try to think about what the feel is of a particular part of the city and then take photos that try to convey that feel. This time I just took photos of stuff without regard to that. Rather than trying to make the city look beautiful, interesting or vibrant these are more slice of life.

I started on the southern edge of downtown:

I've always liked this building. You don't see socialist realism style bas-reliefs in the US very often. This was a bank built right before WWII, the inside is spectacular but I don't have any photos. It is now a Westin Hotel:

Rumor has it that Courtney Love was once a dancer at Augies:

I went back to Northeast to try to photograph it with different light:

I took two similar shots. At some point I will decide which I like best and edit out the other one:

The adjacent residential neighborhood is interesting but somewhat disjointed. You can see pioneer farmhouses, brick apartment buildings and 70s suburban style houses on the same block.

Some more photos of regular stuff. I probably take too many photos of my neighborhood but I don't have a car and it is right there. These are all on Lyndale Ave in south Minneapolis or in the residential areas within a block or two on either side.

This is actually taken in the middle of a relatively dense residential block of low rise apartments:

This was a crappy little vacant store that is being renovated into a Subway. I had no idea it was once a gas station until the tore off all the '80s era siding:

Between 28th and 29th streets is an old railroad spur that was turned into into a greenway with bike and jogging trails and a lot of plantings. It goes through almost the entire south side of the city. The areas around it were once light industrial and commercial - a lot of post war 1 story cinder block buildings. The greenway around Lyndale was in the process of being redeveloped when the bottom dropped out of the economy:

Keep up the good work!

It looks like you guys have a problem with taggers/spray painters like we do, although from your pictures it looks like it's a much bigger problem in Delaware. Your public notice of projects posters and whatnot aren't nearly as covered as ours are. (And taggers have been spray-painting historic buildings around here to simply show off their work, which I don't see in your pictures either.)

The taggers were actually more of a problem in the past, they used to tag everything. Ten years ago I was a chef at a small restaurant, we had to repaint the flower boxes on our patio a half dozen times a summer. These days they seem to stay away from old buildings and independent businesses.

Most of the murals are done with permission. Minneapolis has a lot of nondescript postwar brick or cinderblock buildinds, in the hands of a good artist graffiti murals often make them look better.
