Ghent

I went to an exibition of 15th and 16th century tapestries in the former St. Peter's Abbey in Ghent and decided to make a little walk in the neighbourhoud. It's a part of town just south of the much more known historical centre which you can see in this recent topic.
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=804046

It's not as beautiful but i think it has still got a charm of its own.

The boekentoren. (book tower) A tower by the art nouveau and modernistic pioneer Henry Van de velde which serves as the library of the univerity of Ghent.

Another univerity building.

The Vooruit was a large building built by the socialist party in the beginning of the 20th century which served as a place where the working class could enjoy culture and festivities. It was turned into one the most important Belgian Arts Centres in the eighties.

Right across the street you have the old building to the former socialist newspaper with the same name.

The other facade, some 100 meters further and 10 meters lower.

The Kouter square

The opera, with the old law courts in the background.

The coupure, an 18th century canal which connects Ghent to Bruges and Ostend.

The Bijloke, an old medieval hospital which now serves as a museum and a music centre.

As you said, it's not as beautiful as the historical center, but it's still charming...

By the way, it's always nice seeing your threads, I really enjoy them! I can say that I've learnt a lot about Belgium and its cities with them!

Anyways, thanks for showing this part of Ghent we usually don't see!

I was in the same neighbourhood last sunday, visiting the splendid renovated Museum of Arts.
But it was a grey and rainy day and my batteries were empty, so I didn't take any pictures at all.
So thanks for sharing your great pictures, Evan!

I think its also the city of one of the most known daily cycling races in Europe:
Ghent-Wevelgem

Surprisingly no. These days the races starts a bit outside of Ghent in the small town of Deinze
Omloop Het Volk, the first of the traditional one day races, on the other hand starts and ends in Ghent. Not to far from where the pictures have been taken actually.
