OSL | Oslo Airport

Oslo Airport Gardermoen is the principal airport serving the Norwegian capital city of Oslo. It was completed in 1998 and have a capacity of 17
million passangers a year. 2008 statistics shows that 19.4 million passangers went through the airport so there has been a urgent need of expansion.

There has been a competition and the winner was announced last week. Construction will start immediately with completion in 2013. The airport will
then have a capacity of 28 million passangers yearly.

Gardermoen as of today.

Gardermoen in 2013.

great airport, parallel runways, perpendicular terminal

i dont understand why the new terminal isnt parallel with the current one
this will decrease future capacity

this airport is similar to münchen and other airports with this configuration, now they will mess that up

still, great project

Wait. The competition ended just last week and they are already clearing the site? That is marvelous! In Germany such swift action is unthinkable as there are always lots of people against airport expansion and use every possible legal trick (and some illegal ones) to hinder and delay expansion projects. Even if the architectural competition and the bidding phase for construction companies has been years before.

well, there is no such opposition here since the airport is far away from urban areas. Construction won't begun right away either since not all approvals is done yet as far as i know, but it will start this year.

And the next planns suggests a new/third runway, this is still a decade in the future though.

I have flown in and out of there couple of years ago and it is by far one of the best, most efficient and comfortable airports around..Good job Norway...

Some big projects in Germany (like Berlin's new airport BBI) are also outside urban areas and effect max. small villages. Yet exactly these small villages often turn out to be the hardest opposition which wouldn't even give in, when they are being offered more than enough compensation money.

I agree with you...

A mirror image would of worked out better considering the flexibilty of future expansion... MUC comes to mind... Great layout...

I used Gardermoen this year and it was great, both architecturally and service-wise. Loved the use of wood and I'm glad to see the extension will also use wood. Great airport!

I can only imagine that they want to save on the apron. A new terminal would require at least doubling the apron which is a huge cost. This way they only have to add a little bit of apron.

Plus this way they dont have to put in a people mover.

But if the capacity will be needed in the future, this will backfire. And its not like the norwegians dont have money...

Looks very similar in concept of Hong Kong airport and the New Doha Airport with its T shaped terminal at the end. I wouldn't be suprised if they made another Y shaped peir at the tip of the T shaped Terminal like HKG and the new DOH.
