No the new terminal isn't being built over the Flytorget lines, it's being built over the tunnel which was built when the airport was initially constructed for planned expansion was to be via an infield satellite terminal rather than this (IMO stupid) plan.

The worst part about this new pier is the terminal will lose all the natural light that comes through the windows immediately after security, this is where the new pier will join the existing terminal. That's one of the great points of Gardermoen is the massive amount of natural light in the building.

The new parts will not increase area on top of the rail lines much. The train station will be more integrated with the airport after the extension, but will mostly remain unchanged in the rebuilding. Flytoget will run under the terminal, yes, but it kind of does already.

As you see here, the train station is actually between the old terminal (to the right) and the new terminal (to the left). The new pier, as the Kiwi is talking about, doesn't effect the rail facilities at all.

The expansion of OSL was approved by AVINOR, the owner of the airport, today!
Final cost of the project is estimated to 12,5 bio NOK (€1,6 bio), and the airport will be completed in 2017, ready for 28 mio passengers a year.

Read the full summary of the project at the airports website: http://www.osl.no/osl/micro/T2en

What's interesting is that the new pier is shorter than originally planned, you can even see that they did a pretty poor job erasing it from the render.

that rendering is as old as the rendering i posted, its just that your rendering show stage 1 of Terminal 2, while the rendering i posted show the completed Terminal 2.

Stage 1 of the T2 will be completed in 2017. OSL will then have a capacity of 28 million. Stage 2 will start construction after stage 1 is completed, but will have to be approved first as stage 1 was approved a few days ago. When completed OSL will have a capacity of 35 million.

Sure you have not read about how the T2 is going to be built in two stages before? It has been informed well about this in most articles ever since T2 became a question.

I don't see how stage one increases the airports capacity as much as they say it will, I count 11 new gates in the pier, but the airport is losing 8 of it's existing gates, so a net gain 3 gates. That's a lot of extra passangers and only 3 extra new gates.

There are currently plans to build a new Terminal 2 approximately 500 metres north of the present Terminal 1, and they are to be connected to each other by an underground passage. A third runway may also be under consideration, but that does not look feasible at the moment.

It's a very elegant and efficient looking airport.

Entrepreneur Kruse-Smith has won a contract for mounting of the huge Glulam beams that is the main roof-construction of the new Terminal building: http://www.bygg.no/2012/09/94474.0

The 14 beams will be 91 meters long, and have a span of 54 meters. They expect to start mounting them in October 2013. The whole terminal will be done in 2017.

New part:

Current roof, which is more or less identical:

Sorry for being a party pooper but what am I looking at as both images appear to be identical with exception of the pier extension and remote areas...

The two-step process is completely unnecessary.

Where did you get that number from? The official homepage of the extension project claims the current capacity is 23 million.

They expanded the terminal in 2008-2009, if you don't remember...

The current capacity is 23 million due to the expansion of 2009, but before that the capacity were 17 million. And the first post were written before the 23 million expansion, hence not updated.
