Vancouver - Pedestrians, Transit, History, and Sunshine!

I was drawn outside with my camera in hand by the beautiful February weather today. It is hard to believe this time next year Vancouver will be hosting the Winter Olympics!

I started my journey heading into downtown over the Burrard Street Bridge, eventually winded my way slowly eastward to the more historic heart of the city, into such neighbourhoods as Chinatown, and then eventually made my way to the nearest Skytrain station (Main), got off at Commercial, then decided I was too tired to continue on, ate some Uncle Fatih's pizza, and then took a bus home.

Just for fun, here's a rough map to give you an idea of my route:

And my pics:

Thanks for posting these; they came out very nice. I especially love the one of the New Amsterdam Cafe.

Great pics. Davie St. is a good location for the Gay Village. It has really good potential.

It's also nice to see pics with people walking on the streets. Too many people post pictures of cities that look like ghost towns, where you won't see a single person walking, even in downtown. Fortunately, Vancouver is not like that. (even in winter) I was there a few years ago in late December and the streets were full of people.

Glad they rebuilt the Amsterdam Cafe. Vancouver looks like an Australian city with the abundance of 1970s high rises. Granville Market is wonderful.

I dont quite get that Vancouver is similar to an Australian city. Many say that Melbourne is similar to Vancouver or vice versa and a friend just came back and sai it was similar except that Vancouver was a bit more dirty and had more homeless. The pictures are awesome and it shows quite a rough image of the city and I get that having said that Melbourne also can have a rough side but I dont get the similarity as much.

If anything the city looks like any other city in a Western Country or in America, not so much like Melbourne.

Can someone shed any light on this, fascinated!

Great pics - I never made it to the eastern end of downtown by Chinatown when I was there so it was nice to see a lot of pics of that area.

My guess would be Robson and Burrard.

I think these are the same people that might think Vancouver looks similar to Frankfurt, or San Fran, or Hong Kong, or Sau Paulo. They'll see a specific feature or two and conclude the cities are similar. Melbourne is a relatively young city, Vancouver is relatively young...

I've never heard that Melbourne looks like Vancouver. I've heard that Melbourne looks like Toronto, but I'm not really sure about that either.

I've never thought about it before, but Vancouver does have that Sao Paulo vibe in certain areas. I actually know a couple of people in your skytrain photos lol...

Great pics!

I've often heard Vancouver compared to Melbourne but I'm not exactly sure to what capacity. I don't think it is so much of a looks thing but rather more of a vibe thing (though I could be totally off here). I've never been to Melbourne so I'm not so sure myself. I've really wanted to visit Melbourne for quite awhile now though.
