Every time I went to London (about once a week) I used to stop by in Camden for a bit. It's a great area of the city and despite obvious gentrification, it's still cool to stroll around the high street for a bit and poke in the markets.

I have been there many times and love the area so much. I love unique people who set trends.

Too bad Camden is now on the tourist spotlight and bunches of them now go there and take pictures of the Punks/Goths/Cyberpunks/Darks/Electroindustrials as if they were freaks or something without even asking for permission.

I once witnessed how an average tourist took pictures at some group of Punks staring and pointing at them and one of them got very upset shouting to him: "hey, this is not the zoo, I'm not a freak, why are you taking pictures of me" and then started chasing him. I laughed so much.

The expression on the face of this tourist was priceless. I bet this guy will be more respectfull in the future

thanks for your little anecdote.it's funny though that even the punks here are making a business out of it, asking for a £1 per shot which is quite pathetic. This is not a punk spirit anymore compared to the scene in the late 70s and early 80s here..

I don't see the problem. Look at the photo pages on this forum and you see people have taken photos of locals from all around the world. This is ok, but as soon as someone takes a pic of some punk it's suddenly impolite. Sorry, this is just rubbish. These people are not above the rest of society.

Besides, what do they expect if they dress to stand out. And that's exactly what they do.

really? i always got the impression that asking for money is quite punkish.

It's just plain rude to point at people!
it's normal that there are people on the pic if you take photos of a street scene, but if you focus on them, please, ask for permission.
punks are not your personal clowns or street artists or something.

camden looks like a very colorful place but, i can't help me, it seems like an outdoor museum or disneyland with such crowded streets.

No, it's not rude to take pictures of them, or anyone else. They are in a public place. If they ask you to stop taking pictures (politely) then yes, it is rude to continue to shoot without asking. However, if you are suggesting that for every single shot, every single person takes in every single city requires a personal request of permission, then you are surely mad.

Besides, how do you know that these people are actually taking pictures of punks. You may assume so, because you see them shooting in that direction. You may assume so because you see the punks assuming so and shouting abuse at them, but they may just be shooting the scenery and those punks may just be part of it. They may even be considered in the way by the photographer.

And even if they were taking pictures of those punks in particular, how is that different to all the other pictures of people we see here at SSC? Look at ANY city photo thread and you will see photos specifically taken of people sitting in cafe's, shopping, walking down the streets, riding their bikes etc. This is called cadid photography and is a very valid form of art. If you ask their permission before taking the picture, it is no longer candid photography but posed, which is something completely different.

Sorry, you are entirely wrong. An entire form of art will not be destroyed simply because you and a few over sensitive punks don't like their pictures taken in a public space.

By the way, the fact that those punks chased after this guy could be seen as a threatening act. If they physically attacked that man or touched his camera in any way that would actually be illegal, something completely different to candid photography which is not only legal but can win awards and prizes

The thing with Camden it's now overrun by tourists -foreign and local sightseers themselves. Most of the artists and freaks have moved onto the East End (eg Brick Lane Upmarket on Sundays), but the place is still an interesting place to people watch - the tourists and out of town teenagers that is, made up of the usual Goths and cyberpunks trapped in 1999 .

Great update, thank you!

I love the area around the canal. For some reason waterways like that enhance an area immesurably as I'm sure it wouldn't look half as good without the water there.
