As to another question. Let's say Tehran wanted to become a hub, or at least build a large new airport a380 capable, would it be wise to just add to IKIA? Or could Tehran demolish Mehrabad, let IKIA handle more domestic/regional flights, and build a new airport in Mehrabad (which will also be linked with metro etc). Or just a new, third site somewhere?
I think THR will close and come to IKA when it is expanded.

Very nice pic, thanks. Could be only a short term lease, but doesn't matter. Still nice to see it operating in Iran.

The main problem, I believe, after a possible nuclear deal, is how to get large numbers of narrow bodies in the fleets quickly. Current 737's and a320's. Those things have full order books, and aren't quite ripe yet to be retired. Perhaps lease some? Widebody galore, all those a340's and older 777's are being retired left and right, but the narrow bodies I was wondering.

Good, hope it starts ASAP. Any of the preliminary work done already? First things first, expand IKIA, and we'll see later what happens elsewhere. Good to see development.

Yeah the order book is long. Iran should order asap as they are allowed to. While waiting for the new aircraft the big airlines (for example Iran Air, Mahan Air, Aseman ) can buy narrows from for example Turkish Airlines or Qatar Airways who by then will scrap them. And when the big Iranian airlines receive the brand new aircraft they can sell the older aircraft to smaller airlines like Taban, Zagros, ATA etc...

Just a thought

Yep. There is a problem though, most carriers don't part with their narrowbodies, until they are ready to be scrapped. That means literally. They've had so many cycles and hours on them by that time, that it's uneconomical to still fly them (heavy maintenance and parts needed much more often). I think the best way is to purchase aircraft that have been leased and returned. Many airlines lease as stopgap measures, or in high seasons. So that shouldn't be too difficult.

Gonna be sad to see all those A300's and 310's being scrapped.

PS: does anybody think Iranian airlines have any use for 747-400s? The market is flooded with them. But now the market is also even flooded with a340-600's which are a lot more fuel efficient than the 747-400. So I guess no new(er) 747s for Iran? (perhaps some cargo 747s, come to think of it, probably will happen).

Pps: Darnit, can't read Arabic, but on Mahan Air's website I see a pic posted 1 hour ago of a Mahan 747-400 in Istanbul. Can it be that they're allowed to fly again?

Okay, I wondered because it's in Istanbul. Weren't the 747-400s immediately grounded in Iran? A painted version in Istanbul would be odd wouldn't it?

That pic is indeed old (taken on 20SEP09) but the title they wrote might give a clue on what they will do. The title says: The Mahan Air B744 will soon be active

Wow would be cool... But in the past they almost only used it for regional and domestic routes... What about serving the planned London route with 744

Ah cool So I was onto something trying to get that text deciphered Good then. GTFO sanctions! So 3 more 747-400s for Mahan then. Good sign, together with the last batch of 15 aircraft, that a nuclear deal will happen. Otherwise the US would have blocked it all.

I think flying it domestic was because of the sanctions (the US threatened to ground them and confiscate them), flying to Europe would mean the aircraft would be gone. Perhaps that's the reason?

Ah yeah i think you are right.

I cant wait to know when a final agreement about the nuclear deal will happen and the sactions are released since there were some quotes from the iranian side these days which makes me doubt that it will happen soon...
