Iran Airlines Upgrade as End of US Sanctions Draws Near

http://www.businessweekme.com/Bloomb...190/newsid/673

Quote:
Iran says it may need up to 500 aircraft over next decade

Iran’s acquisition of Airbus Group jets from an undisclosed vendor may be the first move in a rush to rebuild the Islamic republic’s fleet as a thaw in relations with the US begins to weaken the grip of trade sanctions. The purchase by Mahan Air of nine used Airbus planes could herald a raft of deals extending to national carrier Iran Air and potentially including Boeing planes and new Russian or Chinese models. Iran says it may need as many as 500 aircraft over the next decade, requiring $2 billion a year of investment.

The Mahan deal centres on eight A340s, a wide-body type which ceased production in 2011 as the price of oil rendered it uneconomic, before the slump in crude made second-hand examples more attractive. While selling new planes to Iran remains outlawed, it can bypass the ban by buying older jets from sources in countries not signed up to sanctions, something becoming easier as talks seem to near a conclusion. Future used-aircraft purchases could include “some of the earlier Boeing 777s,” says Thomas Pellegrin, an analyst at PwC’s Aviation Center of Excellence research office in Dubai, adding that an end to sanctions would open the door to the acquisition of new aircraft models from Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China and Russia’s Sukhoi, maker of Superjet 100, assuming curbs on trade with Moscow are also removed.
Quote:
Unlike privately owned Mahan Air, state-controlled Iran Air may opt to wait for a formal lifting of sanctions, allowing it to buy new planes instead of old ones. Should restrictions be fully lifted it will need about 100 planes and is interested in models including re-engined single-aisle Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s, together with the 777 and 787 and A330 and A350. The Mahan purchase comes amid negotiations between Iran and powers led by the US on the country’s nuclear ambitions, which aim to reach an accord by 30 June under the latest timetable. An interim deal in 2013 eased a ban on safety-related aircraft spares, which Boeing obtained a license to sell last year. “We’ve done a pretty good assessment on our side and we think the demand, should things open up, would be very strong,” Marty Bentrott, Boeing’s vice president of sales for the Middle East, Russia and Central Asia, said in Dubai in April before Mahan Air’s jetliner purchases were announced on 9 May. Mahan has “extensive plans” requiring an upgrade and expansion of its fleet, part of which has been achieved through the Airbus acquisition, the airline said on its website. A spokesman for the company declined to comment on further plans.

Kish air to buy 7 planes 'directly from the boeing company' this year means they are excepting the sanctions to be lifted... Curious what type these planes will be, i suppose 737_800
However, it is said that each aircraft will cost 17 million, which would mean they are used aircraft...

Tomorrows these flights (according to mehrabad website) will be served by A340... so another 346 has become activated?

DEP 0810 THR- Kerman - ARR 1255 Kerman - THR
DEP 1400 THR- Kish - ARR 1835 Kish - THR
DEP 2000 THR- Mashhad - ARR 2335 Mashhad- THR

Additionally to this 340, both 747_300 are used for domestic flights as well. Can this really be profitable to use these jumbos on such short hops?

I have only seen EP-MMH flying, but if you keep an eye on FR24 tomorrow at that time you will see if it is a new one or not

Funnily enough I just had a quick visit on their website to take a look if Sanandaj is operated but it doesn't look like it...

Mahan Air A346 EP-MMH will right now take off from Tehran to Bangkok. This is the first flight outside UAE/Turkey.

Are prices in Iran regulated from a downwards direction, i.e. is there a price floor to prevent airlines from eating at each other's profit margins? Because bringing about deregulation may be a bad idea because it lead to a race to the bottom among Iranian airlines as they try to cut costs while also keeping ticket prices low, similar to what US airlines are doing.

According to Smile Air's Facebook page, they are going to use three 747-400s, so i think it is probable that Mahan sells MNA and MNC as well. Aditionally, you can see the interior of one ex Mahan 744 plus the plane in the hangar.

Could very well be. The 744's were found to be bought 'illegaly' by a British court. Anyway, it seems the a346's are being used though. Marg bar Ingilisa! Haha. Not totally kidding though, F them.
