Iran plans to buy 80-90 Boeing, Airbus planes a year, post sanctions

Iran plans to buy as many as 90 planes per year from Boeing (BA.N) and Airbus (AIR.PA) to revamp its antiquated fleet once Western sanctions are lifted, its state news agency IRNA quoted a senior aviation official as saying on Sunday.

"Iran will buy a total of 80-90 planes per year from the two aviation giants in the first phase of renovating its air fleet," said Mohammad Khodakarami, the caretaker director of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, according to IRNA.

"We will purchase planes from Boeing and Airbus in equal numbers," Khodakarami was quoted as saying, adding that Iran would initially need to add at least 80 planes to its fleet each year.

The article doesn't mention which aircraft they will buy, but I expect it will mainly be 737s and A320s. Maybe some bigger planes, but I don't expect 747-8s or A380s straight away after the sanctions are lifted.

The article also don't mention planes from other manufactures, but that probably doesn't mean anything. I won't rull out any purchase of the Sukhoi Superjet, the Embraer E-Jets or Bombardier's C Series. Especially since those will have more delivery early slots available. It could become interesting for all manufactures in the next couple of years.

I have heard that the there is a low chance that Iran will buy Russian made aircraft due to bad experiences in the past.

Premium Economy on Germania

Germania will offer Premium Economy Service on flights to Iran from 1st of September. Signs of Healthy demand or lack of service? a bit of both? Interesting anyways. 649€ one way...

Short review

So I have been testing the Germania flight Berlin SXF - Tehran IKA.

It's good, but a chronically delayed because they fly in a W pattern. Food is OK, shopping offer allright, seats a bit narrow, engines a bit loud and entertainment average too, but overall, the offer is really good value for money in my eyes.

Check in and boarding in IKA is a big big mess, because the different contractors like SAMAN, IranAir etc. don't do well in coordinating. So we ended up boarding from the same gate and same time with Aseman to Yerevan leading to a big confusion in travellers. The conveyor belt was partly broken at check-in which meant it was super super super slow. And the usual s**t with Iranian border police etc.

I have some pics from IKA which I will post soon.

Happy to announce it was nearly full on both legs, although the XL seats weren't selling very well. So I'd say 135-145 pax per flight.

Thanks, I tried to find a balanced mix for this livery between green & silver! I'm really satisfied with the result as well. I just used Paint.net

My pictures from ST3329 IKA - SXF

IR to Najaf.

From the Bus, Qeshm A320 arrived from Dubai

Germania never parks at the terminal. It looks to me like they want to be as close to the runway as possible, given they just have a 45 min turnover (well... that's what they plan)

ASEMAN to Yerevan taxiing to runway.

Zagros A320

A bit tight for 5 hours...

Overhead TV showing How I met your mother.

Takeoff.

Near Qazvin.

Qazvin from the air.

Veggie Lasagne - OK.

I think this is Mt Ararat

Yesterday I have spoken to an Iran Air official as I had to go to their head office to handle some stuff for my grand father which was an ex- Iran Air pilot.

I asked out of curiosity which planes they were going to order.

He told me that there are 5 models they have been "ordering" and are waiting for US and UN approval for when sanctions are lifted against the airline.

From airbus it's the: A330-200 and A320-200
From Boeing it's the: B737-800, B787-800/900 both series and B777-300ER

There are no plans to purchase any 747-8i at the moment sad enough.

He said though that they might consider other aircraft in the future, but that would depend on the demand they would have.

I think 777s and 787s are good enough for international routes. Why would you want 747-8 for Iran Air? 737/A320 will be good for domestic purpose

Because it would look great in Iran Air livery + the fact that Iran Air was historically a loyal 747 customer.

I just think the 747-8i is one of the most beautiful planes ever built

I also wonder why they didn't opt for the 777-9, I forgot to ask

It is true as he is one of the officials under Parvaresh

He did not give me more information as he told it's not public yet and can't go into details of the deal and also how many they plan to order.

But one thing is for sure, they won't invest much in second hand aircraft as they will order brand new ones, maybe they'll lease some for the moment until the delivery of the planes.

Whatever happens, we'll know it soon...

But still a shame they didn't opt for any 747-8i or 777-9...

Even the A350...
