Boeing Cleared for Iran Talks After $27 Billion Airbus Haul

Quote:
Boeing Co. is finally open for business in Iran.

The U.S. government cleared the manufacturer to begin talking with approved Iranian carriers about their fleet needs, a first step toward entering the country’s resurgent aircraft market, Boeing said Friday. The planemaker will still need a separate license to complete any commercial jetliner sales.

Boeing had been a notable no-show as the country’s aviation market re-opened, skipping a January aviation gathering in Tehran and causing Iran Air Chairman Farhad Parvaresh to suggest that the company was “lagging behind a bit.” The planemaker said it was following a licensing process outlined by the U.S. government.

As part of the sanctions lifted Jan. 16, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control established procedures to allow the sale of wide-body, narrow-body, regional and commuter planes, along with related parts, for passenger travel. Many other transactions are still banned, including selling cargo planes, state aircraft, drones, and military planes.

Boeing and its rivals could also lose their licenses if a middle man or counter-party turns out to have unsavory ties or is blacklisted by the U.S. government.

“This is not a free-for-all,” said Adam Smith, a former senior sanctions official for the Obama administration who is now of counsel to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in Washington. “It is a very controlled situation.”

The article continues with GE Aviation who have also applied for a license. Something which is important for Airbus. Without the American approval they can sell as many A320neo's to Iran as they want to, but as that plane only comes with American engines it would not be able to deliver is the US government won't give the approval to GE's CFM and P&W.

starting from MAR 27th LH600 is going to be operated on a Boeing 747-400 without F Class- seems like there is not much demand of First Class Premium travels for such short flight. (any who great seeing another 744 back in Tehran)

I guess these will be E-195. Article said they would have 135 seats but it can have up to 124 in single-class high density configuration.

Hej! Yes that's true although he said 135 seats, but yeah it's probably an E195 order.

I wonder why Iran hasn't bought any Sukhoi SuperJets. I'm sure they weren't affected by sanctions and Russia would probably give them a good deal and financing to keep Sukhoi's factories with a good order backlog....

Zagros Airlines and Kish Air were the two airlines rumored to get Sukhoi. They have now bought Embraer respectively Airbus.

Qeshm Air is probably the only "major" airline that hasn't ordered anything yet, and they haven't even mentioned a purchase of Sukhoi aircraft. So by now, no airline intends to buy Sukhoi.

But you never know what will happen. Who guessed that Iran Air would order A380.

There's too much western involvement in SuperJet program, there's no way it could be sold to Iran under the sanctions.

Just look here for a list of American and EU partners in this program.
