It looks like it didn't get permission to enter Iraqi airspace for some reason. Since both countries still aren't on best terms it could have been something very trivial that caused a last minute decision to deny the permission.

Mahan Air to fly to Erbil

Mahan Air will commence flights to Erbil Airport (EBL) effective 11 JUN 2012.

During a function held recently for this latest route expansion Hossein Hosseini the Director of Marketing for the airline said “We are delighted to announce Erbil as our first new route for 2012. He added “We have seen significant growth in Northern Iraq economy during past two years and Erbil as a focal point of trade and tourism for that region. Additionally, the strong demand shown by the businessmen from Erbil to travel to Iran and the continued growth of trade volume between Iran and Iraq has created the right opportunities for introducing direct flights between the two cities of Erbil and Tehran”. The twice weekly non –stop flight which will commence as of 11 June 2012 will be preformed via A310 equipment with 185 economy and 10 business class seats. Erbil will be the 19h international destination served by the airline.

Mahan Air is the largest airline in Iran flying to more than 50 destinations within Iran and points in Europe, Middle East and the Far East. It operates a fleet of 43 aircraft including Boeing 747, Airbus A300/A310 as well as BAe-146 types. It carried more than 5 million passengers in 2011.

It's a weird report, I'm not really sure what they want to say with the report.

First of they talk about the Iranian planes being used for these weapon transports to Syria. If you look at it objectively (which is of course almost impossible) you can say that it's not good that those weapons are delivered to Assad. But since the Western world also supplies the opposition with weapons (probably also using civilian aircraft) you can't really turn it into a big issue.

Then they continue that the same Iran Air planes are used to deliver the weapons are used on regular scheduled flights to Europe. And that Iran Air can only use these planes since they are not banned by the EU like most other planes in use by Iranian airlines. And because of the sanctions Iran cannot buy original spare parts therefor they have to copy the parts that need to be replaced. This creates a possible safety hazard since the planes have many parts that aren't certified. And another problem is that when a Iranian Air plane would crash in Europe it doesn't have the right insurance since the Iran Airs insurance company is also banned in the EU. After this they conclude that the only reason why Iran Air is still flying to Europe are diplomatic reasons. If the EU bans Iran Air, Iran will ban European airlines from flying to Iran.

Then the report ends with the conclusion that when the Iran Air planes can bring weapons to Syria they can also bring those weapons to Europe. This to launch a retribution attack after a possible Western/Israeli attack on the nuclear installations in Iran.

The whole article mixes up several issues that don't necessarily have anything to do with each other. This turned the report into just a sensationalist piece, it would have a made a bigger impact if they would have addressed the different issues separately.

But what it does show is that international and national politics have a huge impact on the airline industry in Iran.

Ok since its very warm in Iran, and while the plane sits on the tarmac waiting to take off and load passengers they have an aircondition truck cool the plane and then remove it when they are ready to fly.

This is a non-traditional way to cool the cabin, but no the flight crew on this flight got creative. But im happy they used this because in the past when i have flown with some flights it gets soooo hot!!!

Mahan celebrates its new Ankara Service

MAHAN AIR celebrated the launch of scheduled flights from Tehran to Ankara with its new non-stop service linking the two capitals of Iran and Turkey and marking the carrier’s 41st destination.

The new route gives Mahan its second non-stop service to Turkey, supplementing existing eleven weekly flights between Isfahan, Tehran and Istanbul. The passengers on the first flight were part of a high level delegation consisting top travel trade members from Iran as well as senior airline executives .They were greeted at Esenboga International Airport by a traditional fireman’s water cannon welcome salute followed by official ceremonies, which included cutting a special cake and ribbon-cutting and speeches by Ankara airport and Mahan Air management.

Welcoming remarks were provided by Ms. Demirer General Director of the Airport .Addressing the gathering on arrival Hossein Hosseini Director of Marketing and Route Planning thanked the airport official for their full cooperation in making the Mahan Air flight to Ankara a reality. He said Mahan was committed to developing its business and reaching out to the travelling public with flights and frequencies to give passengers greater choice.

The expansion, he stressed, was part of the airline’s ongoing growth strategy – a long-term commitment to develop its route infrastructure and fleet. The flights are being performed by 200 seats A310 with two class configuration
