Could any other country have a museum like this? I mean Canada was not perfect in its past but we've more than made up for it.

Scandinavia isn't a country, and Iceland is in Scandinavia, but point taken. As was stated, our beginnings were less than ideal, but Canada has become a nation that champions human dignity. From voting rights for women, to equal marriage, to multiculturalism and equality enshrined in our Constitution, Canada is about inclusion and tolerance today. This museum is a natural progression of that. Everything about this project seems so very right; even the location. When this place opens in 2012 it will be a momentous day for all Canadians.

The residential school system was a BIG mistake for this country. I wonder if they'll have anything on Louis Riel and the Metis rebellion... Anyways, Winnipeg is a great city, can't wait to go back home

One of the ugliest buildings I've seen so far here on SSC!

I don't see how this got to the construction phase!

I’m glad they chose the current design; it’s much more interesting and iconic.

I agree, the design is awesome. I hope the quality of the finished product is as impressive as the render suggests. Let's just get this thing built. There are a lot of great buildings going up in Canada, but this one has the potential to be the most important.

If you want a box you have about 100,000+ buildings like that to choose from. It doesn't matter if some people don't like this design, only that it stand out from the crowd and that the design is well thought out. These images posted suggest that both are true.

Really? The Swiss were one of the last countries in the world to allow women to vote. They didn't receive it until 1971!

Iceland would be to small, and homogenous to allow something like that to be built there.

Scandinavia maybe. But again, as isaidso said, Scandinavia is not a country.

The Swiss not giving women the right to vote until 1971 is rather minor, just like what you said about Canada they’ve more than made up for it.

I do know Scandinavia is not a country, I just thought it would be easier than saying Denmark, Norway, Sweden.

I think that this building definitely has the potential to be beautiful, but it will certainly look odd when seen with winnipeg in the background...

Before we delve into unnecessary associations.. There is a reason why boxy skyscrapers are called "boxy". In this sense, any human-built structure would be inspired by some other object, man-made or found in the nature, or some combination of both. But to me it looks outstanding! Another reason to visit Winnipeg in the coming months (as soon as the weather warms up down here in Minnesnoowda)

There's going to be a huge contrast between the two. I have a feeling it's going to be quite dramatic. Almost like the Guggenheim having Bilbao as a backdrop.

Cross-sectional view of the exterior of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights building as designed by Antoine Predock.
