Athens International Airport Achieves Record Passenger Traffic in 2016
http://greece.greekreporter.com/2017...affic-in-2016/
Quote:
Athens International Airport recorded its highest passenger traffic in its history in 2016, reaching 20.02 million passengers, the company said on Wednesday. Compared with 2015, passenger traffic increased by 1.9 million passengers, or 10.7 percent last year.
Domestic as well as international traffic registered double-digit increases in 2016, by 11.2 percent and 10.4 percent respectively, which translates to 7.15 million and 12.87 million passengers. The rise in traffic was boosted by a 15 percent rise in Greek tourists as well as an 8 percent rise in foreign travelers.
Athens becomes the 25th airport in Europe to achieve carbon neutral status
http://www.airport-world.com/news/ge...al-status.html
Quote:

Congratulations to Athens International Airport, which today achieved carbon neutral status (Level 3+) in ACI's Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

It raises the number of carbon neutral airports across the world to 28, and with the bulk of them in Europe, ACI Europe is well on its way to acheving its goal of having 50 carbon neutral airports across the continent by 2030.

Niclas Svenningsen, who heads the Climate Neutral Now initiative at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat in Bonn, Germany says: "The news that Athens International Airport has become carbon neutral through Airport Carbon Accreditation is a great way to kick off 2017.

Is there a reason for not building jet bridges in the new terminal of Thessaloniki?

It seems a bit strange that an airport that handles 6 million passengers per year doesn't bring this equipment in the project of a new terminal.

Emirates to launch new flight from Dubai to New York via Athens
Quote:
Emirates airlines will launch a new daily flight from Dubai to New York's Newark Liberty International Airport via Athens, the company announced. According to the announcement, Athens is a market with important investment opportunities especially in today's highly competitive environment of the airline industry. According to surveys of the Athens International Airport, passenger traffic between Athens and the US with a stopover exceeds the 570,000 passengers annually, while only in summer 2016, the traffic in direct flights to New York increased by 52 percent, reaching 156,000 passengers. "Therefore, the size of the New York market provides a unique opportunity for activities in the US. Emirates decided to take advantage of that opportunity and also play an important role in the Greek market," the announcement added. Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura welcomed the decision and stressed the importance of supporting "the efforts of the Tourism ministry to further enhance the already increasing tourist flows from the USA and the United Arab Emirates to Greece, on an annual basis, traveling either for leisure or business purposes."

Emirates to launch daily service to Newark via Athens
New route brings year-round flight services between the USA and Greece

Quote:
Dubai, UAE, 23rd January 2017 – Emirates today announced it will launch a new daily service from Dubai to Newark Liberty International Airport, via the Greek capital city of Athens, starting on 12 March 2017.
The new route complements Emirates’ existing four daily flights between Dubai and New York’s JFK airport, by offering global travellers with another convenient access point to the popular New York Metropolitan area.
Emirates’ new Dubai-Athens-Newark flight will also provide a year-round non-stop daily service between the United States and Greece – a service that does not exist today and has not existed since 2012. The airline will operate a wide-body Boeing 777-300ER powered by General Electric GE90 engines on the route, offering 8 seats in First, 42 seats in Business and 304 seats in Economy class, as well as 19 tonnes of belly-hold cargo capacity.

The Airport may be more focused on low cost carriers that tend to avoid using the airbridges.

It may be, though we must agree that this is an international airport serving a metro area of more than 1 million people, the second most populous in the country.

By the way, the extension of the runway of SKG is not because of low-cost carriers needs, but actually to turn the airport attractive to long-haul flights. And not having jet bridges would be a negative point for that.

Well, my opinion...

I agree 100%. Belgrade got the jetways back in 1980 way before my time. SKG deserves the same as there are a quite a few legacy operators.

It's an interesting decision not to include jet bridges for a mid-size European city (~1 million metro area) that's served by quite a few legacy carriers. But architectural plans get revised all the time, so we'll see.

Athens International Airport’s streak continues with a further 10.4% traffic increase in January
http://ypodomes.com/index.php/specia...ase-in-january
Quote:
The performance figures of the Airport are of course very encouraging and create more and more expectations about the future. That is why its interior spaces are being readjusted in order to deal with the increasing traffic. If AIA’s monthly traffic continues at full gallop, in the end of 2017 we expect a new impressive record of 22.5mn passengers. What could affect traffic in both Athens’ and Thessaloniki’s Airport’s though, is Ryanair’s plans to cut down domestic flights between the country’s two largest cities.
Fraport is taking over 14 regional airports in March – Upgrade works to commence in October
http://ypodomes.com/index.php/specia...nce-in-october
Quote:
Fraport plans to attach more weight to the image of the airports and that would be why it has devised a series of upgrade works that are set to start in October 2017 and finish 3 years later, by the end of 2020.

The contractor of these projects is, reportedly, Intrakat, which will undertake extensive upgrade works both in the airports’ terminals and, in some cases, on their runways as well. The most expensive upgrade project will be implemented in Thessaloniki’s, Makedonia Airport, with an estimated cost of 95mn euros while the overall budget is as high as 400mn euros (300mn of which come from EFSI funds). The upgrade project of the 14 conceded airports is one of the 5 Greek projects that secured Juncker Plan’s funds.

The interiors of the terminals will be carefully design in order to promote their commercial success as retail, food and beverage and duty free shops are considered to be very central business activities of the airports. Of course this means that new jobs are going to be created on a local level too.

Athens International Airport enters Southeast Asian market through Scoot
http://ypodomes.com/index.php/specia...-through-scoot
Quote:
AIA is making a very important step towards its expansion in the Asian and therefore, the Australian market as the low-cost air carrier, Scoot will be offering direct flights between Athens and Singapore.

This is really important news as Scoot’s decision, provided that there will also be a well-coordinated strategy by the Greek side, could boost the city’s touristic traffic even further.

With ticket prices starting from 360 euros for a round trip, Scoot aspires to attract the, ever-increasing, low-cost flyers, using Greece as its entrance point into the European market.

This, of course, is a valuable opportunity for AIA to become, not just a terminal destination from Singapore, but also a transit airport and a hub for other European destinations. In that sense, it is also promising that Scoot is already offering flights from Asia to Australia, making it possible to reconnect Greece, on a low-cost basis, to major cities of the Greek Diaspora in the distant continent.

Crete: Kasteli Airport tender enters its 2nd phase
http://ypodomes.com/index.php/specia...-its-2nd-phase
Quote:
The first phase of Kasteli Airport’s tendering process, was completed successfully by the Infrastructure Ministry. The interested parties’ application forms were approved unanimously, after a long scrutiny that lasted 4.5 months by the Committee, and marked as detailed and accurate, allowing the tender to proceed in the next stage.

The 2nd phase includes the evaluation of the unique offer that was submitted by TERNA-GMR joint venture and is expected to last, roughly, one month. After that, and provided than there will not be any complications, the offer will be finally unsealed.

This step is crucial and could take up to 2 months as, apart from the offer itself, the funding model and other factors will be examined thoroughly. Nevertheless, Infrastructure Ministry encourages the completion of the tender that will lead to the project’s implementation, especially after managing to avert the risks that could cause the tender to start from scratch.
