Wow, the present day JB already looks so nice at nite!

But the JB of the future is even more impressive... Something like KLCC when fully completed...

actually i think JB quite similar to KL lah. maybe coz of the buildings' design (glass and concrete) and the way they are lit up.

Wow.. Never realized Batu Pahat is also something like Melbourne... Well-planned with nice grid streets...

Subang Jaya is also another planned city... The whole place is squarish, especially the old SJ... All straight roads, whether the main ones or those in the residential areas...

But yeah, agree with you kevin... A city with more, well, disorderly streets is more interesting... You'll never know what to expect after a certain corner eh?

That's the whole problem......you get 'interesting' corners and surprises but if you are actually driving and going somewhere you'll be cursing like mad!

It is only fun, adventurous and not too boring if you are driving for leisure but it ain't funny when you're lost!

Actually not only SJ, Sunway and USJ are planned areas but also PJ. When I said planned .....it need not have to be grid - take a look at Putrajaya and some cities like Singapore.

If ya notice ....most smaller town like you've mentioned - Batu Pahat are planned during the British times.......another good example would be Taiping. KL are not....see my next reply on why..... V

Well....not neccessary that newer must be better......

I tot I explain this before........you din read again my friend ......it was sometime ago ....I think a month or two ago, I explained somewhere in the forum about the reasons why KL isn't organised!

You see.......cities like George Town, Malacca and Singapore are port cities with great importance to the British. Smaller towns like Taiping are Tin Ore Meccas thus important to the British as well so they kept the towns and cities organised.

The problem with KL is that it grew out all of the sudden from practically nothing. At that time, there are civil wars ( remember Raja Mahidi, Sultan Ismail.....blah blah....my history getting bad liao )....and KL wasn't too important of a tin mining town compared with the rest of the towns like Ipoh or even Ampang!

When the Chinese (in particular - the Cantonese) arrived from Port Swettenham (Port Klang).....tin mining was booming and when the British realised that this little village became one of Malaya's largest town overnight, they can't organised the town anymore as the confusion had started much earlier.

The only grid that we could actually see till today in KL is the Petaling St (Chinatown) area. That is because when the shophouses there are built, there are proper planning already.

Most of KL roads followed the path of the old dirt roads - for instance - Jalan Pudu, Jalan Cheras, Jalan Ampang etc.....

It doesn't help that even after independence, the Selangor State govt isn''t doing anything concrete about city planning (KL was then Selangor's capital). Only after DBKL are established in 1971, city planning took off but then it was a bit too late - so we ended up like what we see today.

In fact, despite the nearly impossible task to plan a rojak city, DBKL made great stride in implementing changes to the road system to make it more systematic. Not many people agree to this, but that is the only way out......to have more one way streets and funny diversions (like at Jalan Sultan Ismail).

If you are not local and driving in KL I just got one thing to say to ya - GOOD LUCK!

The road layout at Canberra and Putrajaya aren't grid as they are not straight and angular

These cities are planned from ground-up, therefore had much more space to spare so can make the 'funny shapes'...actually they are not funny shapes.......more rounded that's all.....

The roads are spaced out so that there would be green pockets and wouldn't create a congested image....
