If there will be a final name, the most likely outcome will come in Legazpi's favor. I hope the country has learned not to name airports after regions (or broad geographical entities), as what happened with Iloilo back in 2006 when some local officials wanted it named after Panay.

Maybe the politicians are gonna wait until the airport is done then they will legislate a name change for the airport para may trabaho naman sila sa congress. Cause lately dun lang magagaling ang mga congressman natin, mag-pass ng bill to change a road name, airport name, etc. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

International Airport in BICOL!

DOTC faststracks construction of SLIA in Albay
DARAGA, Albay Nov. 16 (PNA)-- The implementation of the Southern Luzon International Airport (SLIA) is in full swing as the construction of road components began following the acquisition of some 200 hectares of land, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) in Bicol. The SLIA is a major project of the DOTC under the Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s super region program carrying a P3.4 billion funding to finance the construction of the international airport in the Bicol peninsula which is expected to be completed by 2012. The DOTC said, said it has already processed payment claims of over 200 landowners whose properties were affected by the construction of the international airport at barangay Alobo. The construction of the SLIA will cover 200 hectares of which 187 hectares for the airport terminal and runway, 1.5 kilometers will be used for access road and another 10 hectares of land is being negotiated to be used as resettlement area for residents who lost their property and have no other home to live. Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said the project has already spent some P800-million for land acquisition component of the project, and the pre-construction and other structural requirements including the feasibility study. Salceda expressed optimism that as soon as the land acquisition are completed the airport construction at the 200-hectare plateau in Barangay Alobo would push through as scheduled. He said that the present site is the most ideal and strategic because the location is accessible to other provinces of Bicol such as, Sorsogon, Masbate, Catanduanes including the Visayan provinces through Matnog port in Sorsogon. At the same time, investors from other countries who visited Albay province expressed their willingness to set up businesses following the construction of international airport, Salceda said. The SLIA is just one of the big infrastructure projects in the region now being fast track under the super region concept designed by the Macapagal-Arroyo administration. Bicol is now under the Central Philippines cluster, composed of the three Visayan regions, which focuses on tourism development. Currently, Legazpi Airport served as the airline's hub in Bicol, serving not only local clients in Albay but also transient passengers from southern Camarines Sur and the province of Sorsogon.(PNA) LBV/MSA/cbd

Work on Bicol airport in full swing—Salceda
Manila Standard by Mar S. Arguelles Work on the Southern Luzon International Airport has gone full blast following the acquisition of some 200 hectares of land on which will be built the runway and airport facilities. Transportation and Communications Department officials in the Bicol region said the airport was a big-ticket project under President Gloria Arroyo’s super region program. The airport, located in Barangay Alobo in Daraga, Albay, had a P3.4-billion budget to ensure its completion as scheduled in 2012, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said. The Southern Luzon airport will cover 200 hectares of which 187 hectares will house the airport terminal and runway, another 1.5 hectares for access road and 10 hectares for the resettlement area for residents who will make way for Bicol’s gateway to the world, officials said. Salceda said some P800 million has been spent for land acquisition and feasibility study. Salceda said the project site was ideal and strategic because it was accessible to other provinces of Bicol such as Masbate, Catanduanes and Sorsogon whose Matnog port offered access to the Visayan provinces. Bicol is now under the Central Philippines cluster, composed of the three Visayan regions, which focuses on tourism development. |
