^BIA and SLIA are one and the same and it's going to be in Daraga in Albay. Parang hindi kasi dumaan sa elementary o walang alam sa Philippine geography yung gumawa ng Powerpoint presentation ng DPWH kaya Daraga, Camsur and nailagay

IMO, it should be named as BIA..airport is a gateway kasi of a certain region, therefore we must name an airport according to the area its serving. If its Southern Luzon International Airport can make an impression that it is serving South Luzon generally..

Definitely not. Like the controversy over "Panay International Airport" back when the name of ILO was still undecided, this one is poised to be controversial if it defines itself within the context of such a wide area. Remember: although this airport "serves" Bicol, it actually serves just Legazpi and Albay.

Haay, gripes and pride. Kung bakit kasi hindi inilagay sa gitna ng dalawang biggest metropolis sa Bicol so both would be winner.

Not true... although Naga has its own airport... many camarinense still prefer to use Legazpi Airport because flights are more frequent in Legazpi. It also serves Sorsogon and to some extent Catanduanes and Camarines Norte.

It has already been discussed a lot here why it wasn't placed in the middle of the 2 major cities. Personally I prefer that location... but the problem is that are is very vulnerable to floods (its the natural catch basin of Bicol) while the site in Daraga is in a Plateau.

Here's a visualization

This graphic obviously supports why SLIA(BIA) was ultimately decided to be located in Alobo, Daraga albay.

ILO serves all of Panay but it isn't named "Panay International Airport". Naming an airport after such a wide geographical area has the propensity to confuse airport users, the very reason why naming ILO "Panay International Airport" failed.

But the name "Southern Luzon International Airport" makes it more confusing and rather makes it sound wider as against Bicol. Although geographically Bicol is Southern Luzon, it has never been used to pinpoint the Bicol peninsula. Southern Luzon has this certain tinge to it that it actually includes parts of southern tagalog. But yeah... I am with you in naming the airport as either Albay or Legazpi. But if they choose Southern Luzon, I am more keen on using Bicol.

"but the problem is that area is very vulnerable to floods (its the natural catch basin of Bicol) while the site in Daraga is in a Plateau."

Osaka International Airport was built offshore, far out into Osaka Bay. Flooding didn't seem to be a problem. Ditto with San Francisco, La Guardia, and Haneda. I think Changi is partly reclaimed land too.

It's a one time job only. Just raise the level of the runway to solve the flood.

Yeah it can be done but apparently with only a budget of P3.2B which is half of that of other airport project in the Philippines as of now there is no budget for raising the area above flood level.

That sounds illogical though, because the issue here is between Bicol and Southern Luzon, following your parrallelism, its more appropriate to use Bicol International Airport than Southern Luzon International Airport.

You're misconstruing my point. My point here is that neither of them (Bicol and Southern Luzon) are appropriate.

Sana may update pix about the Construction of the Airport(Runway)...?
Mas ok na rin I Think its Appropriate naman to name it "Southern Luzon International Airport". because it actually serves southern Luzon!

IMHO, naming it as SLIA would create confusion, specially for those who are not familiar with Philippine geography as well as for foreigner/s. Geographically, yes, Bicol is the south most part of Luzon in the east, but we all know that in technical terms, Southern Luzon is Region IV A and B, which is CALABARZON and MIMAROPA. I prefer BIA more than SLIA, or better yet name it to someone prominent from Bicol.

Or just keep it as Legazpi.
