S'pore-Sibu Flights
The Borneo Post
Pinning hopes on direct S’pore-Sibu flights By Peter Boon SIBU: Local businesses will be given a boost if a plan for Jetstar Asia Airways Pte Ltd to operate direct flights from Singapore to Sibu and Miri materialises. Retailer Angy Ng, 46, when asked by The Borneo Post his view on the impact of Singapore-Sibu direct flights yesterday said: “Besides giving the local tourism industry a shot in the arm, it will create economic spin-offs for other business sectors such as garments and the retail business. “It will help stimulate economic activities and result in domestic demand-driven growth as local consumers will be motivated to spend instead of hoard their cash.” “Singaporeans have always regarded Sibu a shopping haven as the town offers a variety of the latest products,” Ng said. More over given the higher currency exchange rate, Singaporeans would spend more with a direct flight between the two destinations, he added. His Singaporean friends consider Sibu their favourite shopping place as prices are competitive, but were unable to do so regularly due to lack of direct flights. He believed direct flights will trigger an influx of tourists from Singapore with the local business community to gain from it. That’s because when one business sector does well, it will spur economic activities in other sectors as they are interrelated. Among others, it will benefit the business class who can travel to Singapore without much hassle, he reckoned. Shop supervisor Nicole Tiong, 24, concurred with Ng’s view that direct flight swill encourage more tourists to visit Sibu. Tiong opined that tourists want to get to their destination in the shortest time possible. “Having to go through transit which is time-consuming might deter them,” she said. Citing herself as an example, she said with no direct Sibu-Kuala Lumpur flight, she would put off her travel plan until a major event is on. Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman James Laju Ambok said if the plan to get Jetstar Asia to serve the Singapore-Sibu route becomes reality, it will give the Visit Sibu Year a boost. “This is not to say that Sibu had been sidelined. With no flight connecting these two locations, Sibu automatically becomes second choice for a visit,” Laju said. Tourists to Kuching may not be aware that Sibu is a town worth seeing hence miss the opportunity to come here. The chairman hopes the plan will materialise soon as it will help promote Sibu and the central region to tourists. Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng thinks such a move would be timely. Ngieng agreed that a direct flight will entice Singaporeans to Sibu - the gateway to the central region. “In fact, we discussed the matter during a recent dialogue between Minister for Urban Development and Tourism Datuk Michael Manyin and tourism industry players here,” Ngieng told The Borneo Post. He reasoned that since five airlines are serving the Singapore-Kuching route, there should be one servicing the Singapore-Sibu route. Meanwhile Jetstar Asia Airways Pte Ltd head of commercial affairs Leslie Ng said the Singapore-based low-cost carrier would look into the viability of including Sibu and Miri on their list of destinations. |

Pandaw Cruises
The Borneo Post
Pandaw Cruises – a prized catch By Puvaneswary Devindran MALAYSIA’s first luxury river cruise to start soon along the mighty Rajang and into the heart of Borneo will not only be Sarawak’s latest prized tourism product but also an opportunity for the locals to reap the spinoffs. The Rajang adventure under the Pandaw Cruises banner and operated by the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company, is expected to open up business and job opportunities to the riverine villages and towns in and around the central region of the state. This could not have come at a better time in view of the global economic slowdown that is casting a long shadow over the various sectors of industry and leaving a deep swathe of job losses in its wake. Certainly, some quarters are amazed at the bold step taken by Irrawaddy Flotilla to operate the Rajang cruise at these uncertain times. But with 60 per cent of bookings already taken taken up for the entire year, the company could very well be onto something good. The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) which mooted the idea of Malaysia’s first luxury river cruise, remains confident the venture will sail over troubled waters and help bolster the local economy. STB chief executive officer Gracie Geikie believes it is during times of economic slowdown that instead of cutting back, more should be done. “There is always a cycle. It can’t go down forever — once it has hit rock bottom, it will come back up. So if you are not ready for the upward spiral, you are not ready to do business,” she explained. Geikie said tourism was probably one of the most resilient industries in the country, adding that the only thing that would probably change was travelling habits but still she believed that at the end of the day, people still needed to travel. And for this, Pandaw Cruises is offering travellers a new experience of getting up close and personal with the local people, cultures … and Nature. “This is not a put up tourist thing — it’s really natural. The cruise takes you right into the heart of Borneo and the wonderful thing is the benefits go directly to the people. “The people in Sibu are very excited about Pandaw Cruises. They know it will put Sibu on the world map and generate economic spinoffs,” Geikie added. Concurring with her is Irrawaddy Flotilla Company hotel director Alexander Scheible who said it was always Pandaw’s concept to get local participation. Working on board the river boats presented the opportunity to travel, and work on other Pandaw cruises after a year of service, he added. Pandaw, the largest river cruise company in Southeast Asia, operates along the Irrawaddy and Chindwin River in Myanmar, the Mekong in Saigon to Angkor in Indochina and along the Rajang by July and the Ganges in India by October. A cruise aboard the RV Orient Pandaw, a replica of the old colonial river steamer, includes a tour to Tanjung Manis and the rattan factory there. Setting off in Sibu, the cruise will go up river to smaller towns like Kanowit and Kapit before turning into the Rajang’s main tributary of Balleh and heading towards the Pelagus Rapids. From Pelagus, the cruise will return downstream to the town of Song and continue on to Sarikei and the Tanjung Manis towns before going back to Sibu. Passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy little excursions during stops at Iban longhouses where they can sample Iban barbeque and watch school children perform traditional dances. They can also take a step back in time by visiting the remaining Brooke vestiges like Fort Emma in Kanowit and Fort Sylvia in Kapit. Both were used by James Brooke, the first White Rajah, to repel attacks from locals who were against his rule more than 100 years ago. Fort Emma, said to be 150 years old, has been turned into a museum. Fort Sylvia, once used as a government office, is now a museum too. Passengers can also visit farmlands where orchards, rice, pepper and rubber are planted, and for the adventurous, there’s always the thrill of shooting the Pelagus Rapids. All these stop-overs will give the locals a chance to market their products such as songket and rattan handicrafts. The price of the cruise is US$2,200 per person but Scheible assures it will be well worth it. “It sounds quite high but if you look at it closely, it’s all inclusive and one comprehensive tour. The boat itself needs 17,000 litres of diesel for the eight-day trip and we have air-conditioners and two generators running all day. “We even have a service that is unique — a ratio of one staff to two passengers,” he said. Scheible admitted it was a bit of a financial risk on Pandaw’s part because it had to prepare everything, including transporting the passengers to the boat, the shows, the longhouse trips, excursions and all the meals — breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, cocktail and dinner and drinks. He said the cost of the boat — 54m long with 30 cabins and a total capacity for 60 passengers — was itself six digits in US dollars. It comes equipped with a restaurant, bar, massage parlour, sun deck and a lounge where lectures on Borneo’s history and cultures will be held. Meanwhile, Geikei said the target clientele was the older generation with the time and savings for a unique experience. However, she was quick to add that the younger set — probably from the corporate sector — could be interested as well. Although Pandaw offers leisure cruises, it also makes an excellent venue for meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) activities. Corporate figures will have all the facilities they need at their disposal. “We have informed our corporate clients through the Sarawak Convention Bureau of this. We also have MICE magazines interested in the cruise,” she said. Geikie added that the Rajang cruise could even create new markets, being the first of its kind for Sarawak and in Malaysia. According to her, the cruise along Malaysia’s longest river had received good response at the recent Destination Fair in the United Kingdom. She said the STB had a simple but symbolic launching of the cruise with Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong, Pandaw managing director Paul Strachan and other dignitaries in London and this, according to her, has generated a lot of interest in the Rajang cruise. Geike also paid tribute to former Urban Development and Tourism Minister, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh (now Environment and Public Health Minister), for facilitating Pandaw’s debut in Sarawak. She said Strachan chose the Rajang after reading the book titled “Into the heart of Borneo” by Redmon O’ Hanlons. “The author’s description of Borneo intrigued him so much that he decided to visit Sarawak and he found his river when he landed in Sibu. He even invited O’ Hanlons to give a talk to the passengers on the maiden cruise.” Geike said Strachan’s confidence in the Rajang as the destination spurred the STB and other stakeholders to work harder in making the cruise a reality. “It’s also for the best of Sarawak as this venture has brought communities together.” She said what made the first cruise in July more exciting was that it coincided with two of the state’s best known events — the Borneo Cultural Festival in Sibu from July 4 to 11 and the Rainforest World Music Festival in Kuching from July 10 to 12. The icing on the cake is that this year has been declared ‘Visit Sibu Year 2009’. Where did Pandaw get its name? According to Scheible, it was actually named after Myanmar’s royal flower or simply the ‘white flower’ worn by royalty there. And it was because of this, he said, the ship did not allow passengers to bring white flowers on cruises in Myanmar as the people there believe it could bring bad luck. “It’s funny really that when something like the air conditioning in the cabin does not work, I would say 90 per cent of the time we would find a white flower on board … and this has become to be part of the experience,” Scheible said. Well, to find out whether the mystical power of the white flower will have the same effect in Sarawak, we’ll just have to wait till July when the RV Orient Pandaw sails in, won’t we? |

RM600m Project To Spur Growth In Sibu KUCHING: The proposed RM600mil industrial complex in Tanjung Manis will benefit downstream industries, such as palm oil processing, and lessen the impact of the global economic downturn, said Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud. “The RM600mil to be spent will boost the economy of Sibu and spur development in the central region,” he said at the project award and signing ceremony for user agreements here on Friday. The Assar Senari Industrial Complex Dua (ASIC II), to be build by the Assar Senari Group and Sarawak Timber Industry Develop-ment Corporation (STIDC), would be a strategic project under the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE). ASIC II comprises a central oil distribution terminal (CODT), the Tanjung Manis integrated port, a palm oil refinery and a light industrial park for petrochemical and oleo-chemial industries. The CODT and port are expected to be completed by the middle of next year and the refinery by the end of next year. “We have obtained commitment from all major shipping agents and mainline operators in the central region to utilise the port,” Assar Senari chairman Tan Sri Bujang Mohd Nor said. He said ASIC II would provide thousands of job opportunities. Taib and Bujang later witnessed the signing of a 30-year user agreement for the CODT between project owner Assar Chemicals Dua Sdn Bhd and Petronas Dagangan Bhd and Shell Timur Bhd. Also signed were user agreements for the port, also for a 30-year period, between Assar Senari and shipping companies Harbour Link Lines Sdn Bhd, Freightworld (M) Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Tenaga Suria (East Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Johan Shipping Sdn Bhd and Perkapalan Dai Zhun Lines Sdn Bhd. Meanwhile, the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contract for the CODT was awarded to Muhibbah Engineering Bhd while the project funding was awarded to Bank Islam Malaysia. |

RM1.2 Billion For Sarawak And Sabah Economies KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 (Bernama) -- RM1.2 billion is allocated for infrastructure development and to increase economic activities in Sabah and Sarawak under the second economic stimulus package, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. Najib, who tabled the package in the Dewan Rakyat today, said among the projects and programmes for Sarawak was the expansion of the Sibu Airport and the dredging of the Miri Port. The allocation was also to repair infrastructure damaged by floods; upgrade schools; build the Lawas Training Centre and the Kota Samarahan Industrial Estate; and enhance tourism facilities. In Sabah, among the main projects and programmes were building several Giat Mara centres, the Kota Kinabalu Electricity Transmission System, improve roads, upgrade schools and repair and replace bridges. "The government will also take action to resolve problems related to health services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital," Najib said. The Second Economic Stimulus Package totalling RM60 billion announced by the government today among others is to reduce the effects of the global economic slump on the nation's economy. In the 2009 Budget, the government allocated almost RM3 billion to Sabah for infrastructure projects, including building 266 kilometres of federal and rural roads that would benefit 550,000 local residents. For Sarawak, a RM3.3 billion allocation was set aside for various projects including building 230 kilometres of federal and rural roads that would benefit 350,000 local residents. Tourism products promo in KK
Eastern Times
![]() Tour agents and operators in KK showing interest in the new tourism products in Sarawak. ROGER DUYONG SIBU: More than 50 representatives from 25 tour agencies in Kota Kinabalu turned up in a “Sarawak Product Up-Date” roadshow held at a leading hotel in Kota Kinbalu, last Wednesday. “We are very happy about the good response from the travel agents and tour operators, especially of the up-coming Rajang River Cruise that is expected to begin by July this year,” Sarawak Tourism Board Executive, Rudy Anoi told Eastern Times, yesterday. The annual programme was headed by STB officer Kevin Nila and organised by Sarawak Tourism Board to provide latest update on Sarawak tourism products to travel agents in Kota Kinabalu. Rudy said Sarawak Tourism Board officials, travel agents and some hoteliers were present to help to promote the new tourism products. “The response to our trip to KK to promote our new Sarawak tourism products this year has been good,” he said, adding a lot of travel agents and tour operators from KK had made enquiries. He said they were much excited about Sibu tourism products such as the ‘Pandaw River Cruise’ along Rajang River due for launching in July and the opening of the new ‘You Lung Tian En Si Temple’. The Kingwood Hotel’s multi-million-dollar extension project, which would see it being upgraded into an international five-star hotel, was also highlighted and had received positive response, he added. Describing the potential of Sibu a must-see destination, Rudy was confident that good things were heading in Sibu’s direction this year. He said that many agents had expressed their interest in expanding their tour packages to include Sibu as their next destination besides Kuching and Miri. After all, many are aware of Sibu’s potential as one of the favourite tourist desinations in the future, considering its wide selection of local delicacies, according to Rudy. “The operators and agents have told us that they would take advantage of the direct flights by both AirAsia and MasWings to Sibu,” he said. Among the agents and hoteliers joining the Sarawak team were Miri Marriot and Spa, 360 Hotel, Borneo Highlands Resort, Borneo Tropical Rainforest Resort, CPH Travel, Grand Margherita Hotel & Riverside Majestic Hotel, Harbour View Hotel, Inter-Borneo Tours Sdn Bhd, Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites, Orient Holidays, Seridan Mulu Tour & Travel Services, Unicatay Travel & Tour - Henry Houn, Wah Tung Travel SB (KCH). |

Works on airport terminal extension to start soon: Wong
The Borneo Post
By Raymond Tan SIBU: Works on the extension of Sibu Airport terminal costing RM150 million will start soon. Revealing this at the installation of Sibu SUPP Town Service Centre at Kingwood Hotel on Monday, Second Finance Minister and Minister of Public Health and Environment Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said this was a project that had been planned by the Sibu Visionary development Team led by him. He said the team had listed out 10 construction projects and 32 other projects to upgrade the town, and the airport terminal extension was one of them. “While most of the others have been accomplished, the airport extension is one of the few that we are still working on.” He said the extension project, once completed, would be a pride of the town. “The extended airport will be larger than those in Miri and Bintulu. It will have environment and community user-friendly features.” He said his team members, particularly Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Robert Lau and Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King, had lobbied hard for the project. On the eight-bridge road to Tanjung Manis, he said this was another harder-to-come-by project they had been working on. “Works have already begun.” He said as more development projects were accomplished, the people have begun to see further and demand for more. “This is a good thing because we all look for better life and high living standard.” Wong said the people’s three wishes here were the settlement of their land lease renewal, flood mitigation and education for their children. “The land problem has been partially solved. We are still working on the rest.” For flood mitigation plan, he said the Department of Drainage and Irrigation was working on it too. “They cannot immediately solve the problems, but they have identified the need to improve the 11 major drains in the town to flush out extra water during heavy downpour.” He said they had also identified certain problems in the works, like water in low-lying areas, which was lower than the level of the river water, and therefore not easy to drain out. Wong said they would also start raising the roads as one of the immediate flood mitigation plans. For the Chinese education, he said more fund would be channeled to the sector. He said he would meet the management board members of Chinese schools to look into their needs. “The people must see the fair challenges of all Malaysians, and never to fall into the trap of the opposition parties.” He said SUPP would not get themselves caught in their war of words because if they did, they would too fall into their trap. “We shall instead spend our time working with the people to accomplish their wishes.” He said what the opposition did was just making statements, “but, for us, we want action done”. He said his visionary development team also wanted to create more job and economic opportunities for the people and this town. “That is why we are aggressively promoting tourism by launching Visit Sibu Year.” He was happy that their efforts had attracted the Pandaw Cruise in carrying out the Rejang River Cruise. “I have just received an e-mail from the Scottish company, saying response to their tour launch was so overwhelming that 1,400 tourists made up mainly of Americans and Europeans had signed up for the adventure package. The river cruise will begin on July 1.” He said tourism was one of the best investments during economic hard times because it would help to create job and economic opportunities for the people. |
