Sibu’s flower wonderland

By ANDY CHUA

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...09&sec=sarawak

YOU do not have to go to Japan to see cherry blossoms or to a temperate country to experience the blossoming of the rosy trumpet trees, scientifically known as Tabebuia Rosea.

You can find them in Sibu where the strange phenomenon of the blooming of these deciduous trees is happening when the weather is warm and humid. Last year, however, such phenomenon did not occur due to unfavourable weather.

Close-up: A branch of a trumpet tree at Jalan Pedada.

Unlike previous years where the flowers were white, this year proved to be quite different. Most of these trees have their flowers in purplish white.

According to a Chinese physician here, Chua Chien Kee who is very fond of flowers, the trumpet trees originated from tropical America where the trees blossom between January and April. But for a place like Sibu, the timing can be quite unpredictable.

Normally it is from August to September but this year it happened too early.
At its peak, the trumpet trees along Brooke Drive are a sight to behold. Only a few of the trees are blossoming this year at Brooke Drive.

This is in contrast to Jln Pedada where the attention is somehow shifted there. Local motorists not wanting to miss this rare sight, are travelling up and down Jln Pedada to feast their eyes on this colourful sight.

Beautiful: A motorcyclist riding past one of the trumpet trees at Jalan Pedada.

As a result, the traffic volume at the road is unusually heavier than on any other days. Trumpet trees are also found at the carpark of the town square.
Beautiful trees like the trumpet trees make a person happier and soothe the heart when one sees the beautiful leaves drop down. Such phenomenon is expected to last for a month. To outsiders, this could also be a good time to visit the town.

Not many rich people live in Sibu Jaya. That's why not many banks. They don't care even there are more people living there than in Kanowit. It is all about the money.

Yeah.. Sibu Jaya is kinda far from Sibu. They should look at Siburan which is also around 25km+ from Kuching, or Tudan/Permyjaya in Miri.

Old airport site for new Sibu indoor stadium

by Jane Moh.
June 11, 2011, Saturday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2011/06...ndoor-stadium/

MODERN LOOK: An artist’s impression of the proposed new Sibu Indoor Stadium at old Sibu airport.

SIBU: The new Sibu Indoor Stadium would soon be constructed at the old Sibu airport to provide more sports facilities. Speaking to the press at Tun Zaidi Stadium yesterday, Second Minister of Finance Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the RM25 million project had been approved by the state government and construction work would begin soon.

Wong, who is also Minister of Environment and Public Health, said the project was under the approved master plan for the redevelopment of the old airport site.

“Half of the redevelopment project is designated for sporting facilities and IT library.

“The remaining half being earmarked for mixed use educational, commercial and residential development,” he said.

He also said the new stadium would have a large seating capacity for spectators.

“The implementation of this project is to construct an integrated sports centre on the 16-acre land.

“It will comprise an indoor stadium with a seating capacity of 4,068, three-lane indoor running track, concourse, changing rooms, offices and security control, function hall lounges, spa and gym and grand foyer,” he said.

Meanwhile, the RM4 million upgrading works to Tun Zaidi Stadium are now completed. Wong said the project, which started last August, was completed at the end of March. The project scope included demolition works to the existing running track, construction of RC platform for running track, supply and installation of synthetic material to the running track, long and triple jump track and remedial works to D area and steeplechase water jump area.

The project coordinator, Sunny Eu from Pembinaan Uta-Jaya Sdn Bhd, said the newly renovated stadium was based on an internationally approved system.

“Bukit Jalil Stadium and six running tracks for Commonwealth Games in India are also using the same system,” he said.

Also present were honorary president of Sibu Amateur Athletic Association (SAAA) Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming, SAAA president Dr Gregory Hii, chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Datuk Tiong Thai King and Sibu divisional engineer Vincent Tang.

Why it's always KPSU (read: State govt) who give fund to construct stadiums? Where is federal fund?

M’sia’s first indoor volleyball stadium to be built in Sibu

Posted on January 22, 2011, Saturday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2011/01...built-in-sibu/

SIBU: The construction of the RM5 million fully air-conditioned volleyball stadium in Rejang Park here, which is expected to commence next month, will enable national-level tournaments to be held here in future, Sibu Volleyball Association president William Ting said yesterday.

He said the planned venue, Malaysia’s first indoor volleyball stadium which conforms to international standards, would house two indoor courts when completed in two years’ time.

“With the new stadium, we can organise volleyball tournaments of larger scales with up to 5,000 spectators and this will save us a substantial amount of money in taking part in national-level tournaments which are generally held in the peninsular,” he said.

Besides enabling the association to conduct trainings in an upgraded manner in a bid to improve the local standard, he said, it would save tens of thousands of ringgit merely for purchasing flight tickets to send the teams to tournaments outside the state. — Bernama

- Of all places, why must be Rejang Park. There are many other places still not developed in Sibu yet they want roboh a basketball court to build a new stadium. Why don't they build at the stadium tun zaidi area there (old airport).. They should develop old airport area as the sport centre; stadiums, indoor stadium, volleyball stadium, hockey turf, racing track etc... Rejang park citizen also complaining about the volleyball stadium being built at their area.. refer to this article;

Chen: Airport road needs immediate upgrading
Posted on June 17, 2011, Friday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2011/06...ate-upgrading/

SIBU: Several stretches of Airport Road here are fast sinking, with cracks and undulating surface posing potential danger to motorists.

Lanang PKR chairman George Chen said that through a survey he conducted recently he found out that 60 to 70 percent of the road was sinking.

“The authority concerned ought to give the road a total upgrading so that the people as well as tourists will have a better image of the infrastructure development here,” he told a press conference yesterday.

The road, he added, had been completed for more than 17 years but hardly had there been a complete upgrading.

“At times, the authority concerned did carry out minor repair and maintenance work but that was not enough. The whole stretch needs to be upgraded,” he said.

Tourists touching down at Sibu Airport would have to use the Airport Road to get to Sibu town and if the road were still in a poor and sickly state, it would give them a bad image of Sibu, he added.

This Masterplan is prepared for the purpose of Application for the Replanning of the Existing Sibu Jaya Township Masterplan. The proposed site is called Sibu Jaya, 1km from Sibu Airport and it is centrally located along the Pan-Borneo highway, which is the first trunk road that links Kuching and Miri division.

I hope they can try to expand Sibujaya more towards Sibu town, so that more people can move in there.
