Eros looked better in the middle - well it still is but you know what I mean.
...and too may tourists sit in round the statue - looks untidy! ![]() I can't make my mind up about the advertising - really in all honestly the light blue Trocadero signs look worse than any potential hoarding - totally washed out and cheap looking. If they still have them...that is.... |

Thanks for all the feedback I love the 60s pic and had it as my computer’s wallpaper for quite a while! I read somewhere that Michael Caine got the idea of talking to the camera in Alfie from Albert Finney doing the same thing in Tom Jones… anyway I digress.
Have written to Westminster stating that I think a complete embargo on all new signs is going a bit far. Given that the person I spoke to said the council’s position on this had ‘hardened’ in recent years it’ll be interesting to see their response. I wondered if they’d get rid of all the signs if they could. Here’s another interesting site showing various images of the Guinness Clock and surroundings. The GC was a staple of PC for many years. http://www.guinntiques.com/piccadilly/piccadilly.asp |

This will always be the classic image of Piccadilly Circus for me, the 1980/90s version with static signs that lit up. Todays' video screens have just lost it for me and feels complete overkill.
![]() Not the same. ![]() Ooops

![]() The new signs do give it that daylight at night effect though - which I love. I noticed that effect before I even noticed the new signs. |

I love the video screens. They reassure me that at least 0.0000000000001% of London isn't stuck living in the past...

There is no way they could justify the cost now. The TDK sign hasn't changed for decades.

[QUOTE=Haddington;32929782]While browsing the Westminster Council website today I noticed that 3 planning applications for new illuminated adverts had been rejected. The applications were for the London Pavillion (which was plastered in adverts until the late 70s) and now part of the Trocadero.
I was disappointed by the rejection so phoned the planning dept and the person said that as a listed building they would never allow adverts on this building or indeed any other in the area. QUOTE] Isn’t the screen on top of Aberdeen Angus at the top end of Haymarket relatively new? It looks rather crap all by itself and needs company. Bloody Westminster retrogrades. Will never forgive them for not investing in cleaning up Oxford St /Soho before the Olympics. The Contemporary Westminster exhibition at Building Centre is well worth a visit by the way and makes you forget for a while that Westminster is run by a bunch of twats. Lots of good low rise projects, one or two you may not know about, obviously nothing highrise. Personal favourites – White Cube Gallery and Inn the Park, both in St James.

^Agreed, though having said that, there is an application for a screen in Piccadilly on the planning website, by coca-cola though.

Just read on the news- not sure if anybody here knows but sanyo have chosen after 33 years to stop advertising here- a new, updated (LED this time) board will be put up in quite a rare advertising space by a new company- any bets on who will snatch the space?

I'm betting McDonalds. They would advertise on your forehead if they could.
