Looks like the airport won't be ready until the end of the year. I saw the trichy pics when they were at this stage. Although the airport was inaugrated in 6months later, flights didn't take the new airport until one year later. I also read somewhere that Paramount will be the first to fly from this terminal to overseas. Now a days i look at this website for any updates for the madurai airport. Singapore to Madurai will make my life lot easier, i hate having to transfer at chennai. Spending one day in chennai and catching the flight to train to my home town. Will become one of the first people on the plane between singapore and madurai.

This is indeed massive and well planned out I think. Sme can be said of the new Kovai airport also. But I am not sure why Trichy airport was so ill planned and small. Might make a difference in the long run !

Cool Thinathanthi News about new terminal

An article about Madurai Airport new terminal in Thinathanthi Madurai Edition, 18th Jan 2010, Page No. 18.

This article says new terminal will be ready in 5 months which is the end of June.

Sundar/Arul,
Thanks for bringing the news update here. Good to see some media coverage on this after a long time. While its nice to see some progress, there seems to be a lot of work remaining to be done. Let us hope they stick to the 6 months timing.

Yes Madurai... I too concern about the remaining work to be done.

Last Sunday, I return from Goa via Chennai to Madurai in Paramount Airways. I talked to airport officials (Don’t know their designation) and travel agency about the new terminal. They said it will take around one year to finish the entire work and make working and they added happily I will land in new terminal on my Next year (2011) Pongal vocation .

I saw the below board details when I had zoomed one of the photo of the above album:

It stated that the target date is 31-March-2010. It wouldn't seem to be completed by March. Any how it is nice to see they are working of some short target date and even they extend their work for another 2 months, scientifically we may have new terminal by June.

After going thru the photos in Vathsala's gallery, I would like to thank the person again for the wonderful updates, and also Sundar Amu for bringing it here.

Few things that I want to point out, which might have observed by others also,
  • There seems to be some busy activity going on. It is definitely not lacking in buzz and doesn't seem to be idle
  • There is some work on the Car Parking area and also on the approach road, which is a good sign
  • There is some glass work done on the ABs as well as the sides of the terminal, which won't be the case if more heavy structural work is remaining
  • The majority of the roofing work seems to have been completed
  • The target dates on the notice board seems to be at least genuine, in terms of the number of days calculation etc., Whether it's going to be met is a different story. But, at least they are working towards a target
  • There seems to be lot of material stacked for construction work, which shows that there will be no lull and work will proceed continuously
  • Even inside the terminal, there is some wall plastering work has been done in some places

Though I am not optimistic on the March 31st date, I am hoping that the speed will pick up soon. Hoping to see further updates from Vathsala/Sundar Amu and others.

Lifts, Escalators, Flooring and other work are still remaining to be done, besides probably a lot of interior work. Let us hope to see further updates.

I hate the words used by Tamil papers

There are lots of hugh terminals and MDU is getting it very late then why this kind of Hype(Bramanda) words.

What's wrong in it? Even Chennai is lagging behind other Metros. That doesn't mean that we shoud keep quiet, right?

Dear Madurai

Thank for your wonderful video.

I need a clarification... I landed Madurai airport 2 weeks before from other side of the runway. The same Paramount airways but at 8 PM. Is it related to ALS? I remember we discussed earlier in this forum about whether Madurai has any ALS.
