New South Whales? You mean New South WALES!! :o)

Yes Maria Theresa, they are safe to swim, but of course sharks are a part of Australian life so there is always a risk. However I am not sure what beaches, if any, have shark nets to prevent them from getting close to shore. I have swam around there many times and still here :o)

Thanks guys,
Yeah there are sharks of the coast here, but it is some of the most eastern coastline on australia so there is planty of marine life so i dont think the sharks are too hungry.
Its also depends where you swim,
if you swim at a patrolled beach its usally ok,
just dont swim at dawn or dusk or near river mouths or when bait fish are moving up the coast.

To be quite honest I prefer living on the Gold Coast...

However Ballina is a pretty cool little town and it's really close to Byron Bay one of the coolest beaches in the world!!!!

Thank´s for the info. Glad that nothing happened to you.

Here in Brazil the only place with a real shark problem is Recife. In the rest of the country, INCREDIBLY, there are no shark attacks. In Rio, for instance, I guess never any shark attack was recorded! Florianopolis also!
