Hardangerbridge, Norway

Contracts has been signed, and 26 february construction started on the Hardangerbridge project. The lengt is 1380 meters, and the span is 1310 meters. Sailingsheight is 55 meters and towers reach 186 meters.

The bridge will have to lanes and a with of 7,5 meter for the roadway, and a bike/walkpath. The trafic on the bridge is only estimated for 1850 vehicles per day in 2020 since it's located in a very sparsely populated area. Opening is scheduled for 2013.

Atm. a ferry runs over the fjord every 20 - 60 minutes depending on the season, the ferry takes 10 minutes. Project will cost 1800 million kroner (around 200 million euro.) and over half of this will be payed by toll on the ferry and after completion on the bridge.

The national routes 7 and 13 crosses the fjord, route 7 is the shortest road between Norways largest cities Bergen and Oslo - but it's not prefered because of poor road condition and bad weather across 1300 meter high Hardangervidda plateau. Route 13 is a prefered inland north/south regional connection.

In each end of the bridge it goes directly into a tunnel with a trafic-circle, a total of 2,4 km tunnel and 0,8 km road is included in the project:

I wonder why they build a suspension bridge on this? why not a tunnel instead? It's unique though.

Wow is right, amazing bridge, and the way you approach it from the tunnel is amazing. 30 meters longer than the Golden Gate, wow

That's how taxes generally work. Especially in rural areas, the local tax income is far too low to sustain some kind of infrastructure. Other regions make up for this.

You're all rolling in oil money though!

It's better to have people employed and working on this bridge than unemployed and without a nice new bridge

I'm not sure if I like the bridge, or just the scenery around it. Either way, very beautiful.

I think single-track HSLs would be great, because you dont need the capacity, you just need the speed. Buses are great to get around Norway because of the view, but considering the size of the country you should definitely have HSR.

Im thinking Oslo-Kristiansand-Stavanger, Oslo-Bergen and Oslo-Trondheim.

I tryed to find data for the dept of the fjord, but couldn't find it. It's likely to be more than 200 meters... Deepest spot in the fjord is 850 meters...
