I don't think 10m shorter is anything to worry about.

Surely the home ground advantage we have with the different dimensions at Subi equated to a disadvantage when we travel interstate anyway.

It'll be interesting to see if they use artificial turf.

I think its easier to adjust to a shorter ground than a longer ground (maybe not SCG short though because thats ridiculous).

I would have actually preferred the ground to be similar in dimension and have that regulated around all AFL grounds. either way I doubt the difference is that huge though but if anything its a slight advantage to the Eagles big kickers like Hurn and Lynch.

They already use a blend artificial and natural turf at the MCG and Docklands and full artificial turf outside the boundaries at most AFL grounds, including Subiaco.

It's not really an artificial surface but. It's more of a mesh to hold the real lawn together properly. I would assume they would use this.

I dont think it's that. It's just the AFL is such a massive professional organizations these days. And they dont like anything which makes them look a bit 2nd class, which the muddy old suburban, and larger grounds did.

What lays outside the oval has no real impact on the game play. As for Patersons Stadium, they have a small stetch of fake stuff along side the players benches only. Everywhere else is still natural turf.

No doubt Populous would have looked into the merits of FieldTurf, I don't how the AFL or the ICC feel about it, the IRB are yet to sanction it for International play while FIFA have. It could prove more flexible and be a real possibility considering Populous' suggestion of having either a fixed or retactable roof to broaden the Stadiums events capabilities and attraction.

* Remember there are different varieties of Artificial Turf these days rather than just the first generation AstroTurf which is good for nothing but Hockey.

^ The roof thing is a key factor when thinking about the turf. Perth gets plenty of sunlight, but some areas of the pitch may get considerably more than others. Numerous new stadia around the world have struggled with lack of light leading to turf issues - most notably Etihad and the new Wembley - and some of the new Turf "blends" may help resolve that, whilst also providing a more robust surface for the multiple uses this stadium is to be designed for.

Ha at the Channel 9 video, had to complain about something
who gives a crap if its 10meters shorter, the more it is like the MCG and Etihad the better because it means theyll be use to it when they go play over there

One thing of note is that Ground Tier seating will have to be removed ala MCG if they ever wish to place and Athletics track in there. A 9 lane track like that at Londons Olympic Stadium has a length of just under 180m from the outside edge and that doesn't include any perimeter gap. With an AFL playing field of 165m/130m one may assume fence to fence it will be another 10/12m length and width.

The ICC only require the pitch to be natural.

Thought the same thing when watching it on Channel 7 last night. Big fucking deal that the ground is a few metres wider/taller/shorter. Story out of nothing.
