and some interesting images on the Pert Stadium website... they seem to update the website rather frequently, with three new news articles from yesterday.

That awning over the west facing stand is going to do fuck all for summer afternoon games.

Glory on the hunt for a new home

By Tim Clarke
7 June 2012 10:44AM EST

PERTH Glory is on the hunt for a new home, with the tense relationship between the A-League grand finalist and nib Stadium to be officially ended.

Allia, who manage the former Perth Oval for West Australian local authority the City of Vincent and Glory are due to announce the end of their relationship as soon as Thursday.

The dissolution comes as the state government announced a $95m upgrade of the stadium, to start next month and to finish in March next year.

The state government says the eastern, northern and southern sections of the stadium will all be included, with work to be carried out by BCG.

It will bring to an end one of the most enduring tenures in WA sport, but one which has consistently left millionaire Glory owner Tony Sage frustrated.

Sage could now consider playing Glory home games at the former Subiaco Oval, now called Patersons Stadium, which is also home for AFL clubs West Coast Eagles and Fremantle.

Sportsnewsfirst.com.au understands that Sage could save around $100,000 a match staging his games at Patersons Stadium.

Sage confirmed that Glory's first game of next season on October 8 will be played at Patersons Stadium against Brisbane in what will be a hugely anticipated grand final replay.

Sage told local radio 6PR he was on the hunt for a new home for the club following the announcement of a massive upgrade to nib Stadium on Thursday morning.

The Glory owner said he was "incensed" that the stadium's anchor tenant had been ignored in the plans to renovate the ground.

Sage revealed he had already been in talks with Burswood Dome, which would make the Glory the first southern hemisphere team to play indoors on artificial pitches.

The FFA has yet to be persuaded, however.

"The alternative is we never play there again," Sage said.

"We want to move to the Burswood Dome, have it under cover and we have already talked to the FFA about that.

"We have measured it out ... we would love to play indoors, with a reduced capacity - but can you imagine the capacity in there. The dimensions fit perfectly.

"We are walking away (from nib Stadium) for the first game, and we have not got a deal on the table.

"We are looking for a home basically."

The agreement signed between Glory and the FFA before Sage became the club’s white knight has been a constant bone of contention, with the team losing money on every home match.

Without a break-even crowd of about 12,500, the Glory owner has claimed every home game costs him $75,000 to stage.

In 2011, Sage estimated he had invested $27 million in the club for a return of $18 million.

The club will now seek alternatives for the A-League home games - with both Subiaco Oval and Burswood Dome immediate possibilities.

Just last month, Sage wrote to members outlining his desire for a new stadium deal.

“A new stadium deal needs to allow Perth Glory to attract new sponsors, new members and generate additional revenues from home games and most importantly, ensure members and fans enjoy modern facilities and amenities at a reasonable cost,” Sage said.

“Despite the recent increase in tickets prices, which I know was unpopular with many members, the club continues to lose substantial amounts of money each week at home games.

“The bottom line is that we repeatedly fail to generate sufficient income from our home games at NIB stadium to develop a sustainable income stream for the club, and that position won’t change so long as the club remains at NIB Stadium.

“Our present stadium leasing agreement does not provide Perth Glory with the financial certainty necessary to develop a sustainable business, and at present there is a distinct lack of suitable alternatives in Western Australia.

“While we have taken steps to improve our relationships with stadium management and owners, the bottom line is that playing games at NIB stadium is not an affordable or sustainable long-term home for our club at the current time.

“The challenge for Perth Glory is to restructure its stadium agreement, or find an alternate venue that will allow the club to provide players and coaches; fans and members with modern facilities and amenities and create an exciting and stimulating atmosphere around the club."

If they can't build one and a half grandstands for $95m there is something seriously wrong.

Could we see the people who own/manage/run nib (whoever they are) come back to the Glory with a new more viable deal to keep the Glory at nib? Or is there something wrong with nib that makes it unsuitable (i.e. lack of seating etc)?

Glory is pissed off cause the capacity will be greatly reduced to something like 4,500 seated (9000 total) during construction, which runs right through the middle of their season.

Ok, I can see the potential issue then. They should be cut a decent deal to stay during construction.

Sage spits dummy over stadium upgrade
PHOEBE WEARNE, The West Australian June 7, 2012, 10:53 am

Perth Glory owner Tony Sage says the $95.14 million redevelopment of nib Stadium could force the A-League team to find somewhere else to play because the upgrade is due to almost halve the facility’s capacity in the coming season.

Mr Sage said they were looking at moving games to the Burswood Dome and playing undercover, provided the venue was not due to be demolished in the next couple of years.

Burswood Dome was first flagged as a possible home for the Glory in 2007 while the owners were negotiating terms over staying at nib Stadium.

“They’re telling us now that we’re only going to have 9000 (capacity), of which only four and a half or 5000 are seated,” Mr Sage told 6PR.

“That means 5000 have got to stand up.

“There is the alternative – we’ll never play there again.”

Mr Sage said construction should have begun months ago or been left until the end of the season.

“We’ve been the anchor tenant there since 1996,” he said.

“For them to come and destroy our entire season, and not impact on rugby who only play seven games a year there, is just an absolute farce.”

At completion of the first stage of the upgrade, which includes replacing all temporary sections of the facility, the stadium will have a capacity of about 20,500 people.

It currently has a capacity of 18,000, but during the 2012-2013 A-League season it will operate with a reduced capacity of about 9500 people due to construction.

The first stage of the redevelopment is expected to be completed in time for the Western Force’s first home game for the 2013 Super Rugby season.

BGC Construction has been awarded the head construction contract following an expression of interest and tender process.

Works will begin on July 2 after the last home game of the 2012 Super Rugby season.

Major construction works are expected to be completed in March next year.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said he was pleased a new permanent southern stand and seating of the northern bowl could also be achieved within the project budget.

“This is a fantastic result for our rectangular sporting codes as the redevelopment will provide a huge boost to the stadium amenity and, in turn, will provide a much better spectator experience,” Mr Waldron said.

The upgrade will include a covered eastern grandstand, a new uncovered southern stand, new food and beverage and toilet facilities, a 250-seat barbecue terrace and seating for about 420 patrons in open corporate boxes.
The stadium will also get two large video replay boards, a new PA system, a CCTV surveillance system and new pitch lighting.

A new playing surface will be installed between July and October next year.

Are they seriously putting a running track in the stadium? Didn't they just build a new athletics stadium?

The Athletics facility at AK Reserve (like the Basketball one next door) is not meant for things like Commonwealth Games, which is what is being considered in this case.

I thought the athletics track was referring to the Burswood Stadium (top post on this page)
