A European hub! That's a big ambition, I'm sure Frankfurt and London Heathrow will give it a tough time. I certainly won't mind transitting thru Moscow though.

london, frankfurt, paris CDG, madrid, amsterdam... and we all know that until now, svo, was one of the worst european airports, so i think is so far to get to be a an european hub, i mean, its possible but looking to the future, to the far future...

Problem with Moscow being a hub is that it's too much out of the way. There's nothing but Russia to its East.

Yes SVO until now was not good, but CDG is a nightmare! I'd never use it as a hub! NEVER! Even in 2008 Skytrax statistics, CDS was confirmed as the worst airport in the world, by making a poll throughout the world. Frankfurt is wonderful!! If we talk bout hub, Moscow has a good location, and many airlines would prefer to use Moscow but not Helsinki, its more convenient, but problem was the bad condition of the airports. U say "There's nothing but Russia to its East", but Moscow is good for Asian airlines, to make a stop. For already more than 2 years Singapore Airlines use DME as a hub between SIN and Houston. And many passengers use Aeroflot on route Paris-Tokyo via SVO.

MOSCOW, June 26 (Itar-Tass) - Representatives of the Governing Board of the international airline alliance SkyTeam of which Aeroflot - Russian Airlines is a member, on Friday will get familiarised with a new passenger terminal of Aeroflot at the Sheremetyevo airport.

“The Sheremetyevo-3 terminal will become the alliance’s Russian hub,” the company’s press service told Itar-Tass. “Both internal and international flights of Aeroflot will be transferred to it, as well as flights of SkyTeam air companies.” The terminal’s construction will be completed in the third quarter of this year.

The terminal is expected to receive up to 12 million passengers a year, factually doubling the capacity of the northern air hub of the Russian capital.

Passengers will be serviced at 143 check-in counters, including 24 self-service check-in counters and 30 check-in counters for transfer passengers and oversized baggage.

The new terminal will use the system of baggage identification with the use of radio frequency tugs (Radio Frequency Identification) that will make to reduce by 90 percent of average the time of baggage registration.

Passengers will have at their disposal 6 high comfort halls, 5 children’s rooms, 25 shops and 18 catering establishments working round the clock.

“For the original architectural design the Sheremetyevo-3 terminal project was given an independent award in the sphere of Russian architecture and development – ARX Awards in the nomination “the best transport infrastructure facility,” the air company said.

SkyTeam™ is the second largest airline alliance in the world - behind Star Alliance - partnering fourteen carriers from four continents. SkyTeam also operates a cargo alliance called SkyTeam Cargo.

When the merger of Northwest Airlines with Delta Air Lines is complete, SkyTeam will consist of 10 full members (and 3 associate members). Once Continental Airlines and Copa Airlines both depart SkyTeam on 24 October 2009 (with Continental Airlines joining Star Alliance on the next day), only 9 full members and 2 associate members will remain. However, the joining of Vietnam Airlines in early 2010 will bring the total number of full member airlines in the alliance back up to 10.

The alliance’s centralised management team, called SkyTeam Central, which has just been formed recently, is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

2000 - Aeromexico, Air France, Delta Air Lines, and Korean Air launched the SkyTeam alliance on 22 June.

2001 - CSA Czech Airlines (in March) and Alitalia (on 27 July) joined.

2004 - Continental Airlines, KLM and Northwest Airlines joined on 13 September. Their simultaneous entry was the largest expansion event in airline alliance history. As a result of the three new members, SkyTeam passed Oneworld to become the second largest alliance.

2005 - Even though member CSA pledged to help Malev Hungarian Airlines become an associate member of the alliance (as opposed to a full member, an associate has no voting rights), Malev opted to join the Oneworld alliance, signing a Memorandum Of Understanding late in May. A few days later SkyTeam announced four new associate members due to join by 2006, each one being “sponsored” by an existing member: Madrid-based Air Europa (sponsored by Air France), Panama-based Copa Airlines (sponsored and partly owned by Continental Airlines), Kenya Airways (sponsored and partly owned by KLM) and Romania’s Tarom (sponsored by Alitalia). Every associate adopted a frequent flyer program of a full member: Copa Airlines already used Continental’s OnePass while Kenya Airways and Air Europa used Air France-KLM’s Flying Blue.

2006 - Aeroflot joined on 14 April. Middle East Airlines was invited to become an associate member.

2007 - Air Europa, Copa Airlines, Kenya Airways became associate members of the alliance on 1 September. China Southern Airlines joined SkyTeam on November 15 to become the 11th full member and the first carrier from Mainland China to join SkyTeam.

2008 - Continental Airlines and Copa Airlines have announced their intentions to move to the Star Alliance after Continental's final flight on 24 October 2009

2009 - Vietnam Airlines is invited to join in April.

SkyTeam has two premium levels, Elite and Elite Plus, based on a customer’s tier status in a member carrier’s frequent flyer program. Each of the member and associate airlines recognises the elite statuses, with a few exceptions. The statuses have no specific requirements of their own; membership is based solely on the frequent flyer programs of individual member airlines

so according to the latest news the new terminal of Sheremetyevo will be opened in 3th quater of this year while it was scheduled to open in August 2009

Representatives of the Governing Board of the international airline alliance SkyTeam of which Aeroflot - Russian Airlines is a member, on Friday visited a new passenger terminal D at the Sheremetyevo airport. Here you can see the pictures. Still there is some work to do inside the building, but almost completed.

The members of SkyTeam international aviation alliance taking part in the Moscow meeting on June 26 2009 will have an opportunity to personally inspect Aeroflot’s new passenger terminal at the Sheremetyevo airport, which is to become the Russian hub of the alliance.
The construction of the Sheremetyevo 3 terminal is planned to complete in the Q3 2009. The new terminal will take over Aeroflot flights, both international and domestic, as well as the flights of SkyTeam members. The terminal can handle up to 12 million passengers a year, which practically doubles the Sheremetyevo throughput capacity.
Sheremetyevo 3 will be the best passenger terminal in the Eastern Europe. The original architectural solution of the Sheremetyevo 3 project has already won the Russian independent award in the sphere of architecture and development “ARX Awards” in the “Best Transport Infrastructure Object” nomination.
Sheremetyevo 3 will be Russia’s first full-scale international hub, supported by a base company and the global alliance. Aeroflot and SkyTeam are assigned 3 business exclusive business halls in the international and domestic departure zones equipped with comfortable rest areas, shower cabins and other conveniences. The “Valday” VIP launge will, among other features, offer passengers individual DVD players with movies to watch, and a “deep relaxation” zone."

Ruslan33, third quarter of this year it will start its full operation, start of functioning is in August, after opening date Aeroflot and partners will slowly start to move all flights to new terminal. In August only domestic flights will start its flights from the new building.

I've been to Sheremetyevo-2 a few days ago and what i've seen is that the access way to the 3d terminal is still far from completion. Is it possible that they build up those overpasses and all that stuff by august?

Soorox, as i know, VN are not going to move from DME to SVO, although they are expected in Skyteam, but i am sure it will happen in the future..

Shmack, i am sure they will build it all up until August, actually the main way, the road, is almost finished, i think mid of August all gonna be ready. Of course new terminal is not as huge as Singapore airport or Frankfurt, but still it looks very fresh with much light, not small at all, in comparison with Athens airport, new SVO terminal is bigger, and as i remember Athens, its quite nice and comfortable, and i dont think their plans to become an effective hub is smth incredible, its all possible, because Aeroflot choose Asia as a strategic destination together with russian cities, so it can be a good way for europeans to travel to HKG, PVG or NRT via SVO, especialy AFL put new 332 on these routes, from November a new 330 will serve Bangkok route aswell. And talking about hubs, Doha is not a big airport, but Qatar build an effective connection flights map, and Doha is very popular among passengers as a hub, although current airport is not so good, its old and not big, so still its possible. Many russians use Qatar to fly to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, its much cheaper than SQ flights...

Yesterday. As Iggis said, one can easily witness the progress in highway reconstruction just to the left of Terminal 3.

Interestingly, with such perspective it seems that it would have been much better if the railway ran alongside that highway straightway to the city since it's much closer to Moscow. Also, it would be very kewl to see some kind of air train shuttle there in future.

I'm sure once Sheremetyevo-3 opens, SVO will no longer be in the lists of being among the worst airports in the world.
