VNUKOVO "A"

http://pagadaga.net/

Actually project, made by german Obermeyer Planen Beraten, looked like this and definitely was much more light and beautiful than real terminal. But unfortunately only concept was left, because its was not possible to build such a building with lot of glass, glass roof, due to Moscow climate and snowy winters.

RegStaer prepares to open second duty paid store at Vnukovo Airport

RUSSIA. RegStaer has got off to a strong start with its first duty paid store at Vnukovo Airport, which opened in December 2011. And now it is poised to open a second, 420sq m store later this month, dedicated to perfumes & cosmetics.

The store, in the new Terminal A, offers perfumes & cosmetics, toys, confectionery, luggage and travel items (Samsonite), sunglasses (Polaroid) and watches (Seiko).

Commercial Director Vadim Sagiev told The Moodie Report: “Sales have been even better than we anticipated in the beginning. Based on the first month’s results, perfume & cosmetics contributed 70%, toys 12.5%, confectionery 10%, and luggage, accessories and watches another 7.5%.

“We plan to add more brands from the categories. We will also add soft drinks and are still in negotiations with tobacco companies.”

[Note: As reported, Dufry this month concluded a transaction to acquire 51% of a joint venture with RegStaer Group, further expanding its presence in Russia. RegStaer Group holds Regstaer’s duty free operations at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow and generates annual sales in excess of US$50 million.

The transaction includes an exclusive commercial and purchasing agreement for RegStaer Group’s operation at Vnukovo Airport.

Today's edition of The Moodie Report e-Zine analyses the Dufry/RegStaer agreement and includes an interview with RegStaer Founder Alexander Baev].

CONTEXT TO DUTY PAID OPTION

The context for the opening of the duty paid stores is important, Sagiev pointed out. The retailer finished construction of five planned duty free shops with a total area of 1,300sq m in July 2011 to coincide with the completion of the first stage of Terminal A. At that point the facility was supposed to become operational with international flights.

However, due to various reasons, including the announced change of airport ownership from the city of Moscow to the Federal Government, the launch of the terminal for international flights was postponed, initially for a year.

Instead, all domestic flights were relocated to the ‘international’ part of Terminal A, because the domestic section was not yet ready.

With five shops ready and a curious public wondering why the stores were not trading, RegStaer began exploring the duty paid option. Local regulations meant that liquor could not be sold duty paid and tobacco was not economically feasible on such a basis.

“So we concentrated our efforts on perfumes and cosmetics, confectionary, luggage and travel items, watches and sunglasses,” Sagiev told The Moodie Report.

While there was some initial brand resistance to a duty paid structure, the company has now reached agreements with a wide range of leading names including Puig, P&G, Coty, L'Oréal Luxe, Hermès and Bvlgari.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines have already announced plans to operate flights from Terminal A starting on 25 March, meaning that part of the terminal will become ‘international’.

“That is why we believe that our decision to open a second duty paid shop for selling perfume & cosmetics products is a timely one,” Sagiev said. “We count on the support of the P&C industry for the opening of the duty paid shop, which will be soon transferred to duty free, once this part of the terminal serves international flights.”

DUTY PAID TO CONTINUE

RegStaer said it will continue its duty paid business even after international operations commence at Terminal A.

“We have already signed preliminary agreements with Vnukovo Airport to provide us with premises in the domestic side of the new Terminal A, where we plan to transfer the duty paid operation,” Sagiev explained.

FLIGHT BOOM

German carrier Lufthansa will be offering increased flights from Vnukovo from 25 March when the number of daily flights from Moscow to Frankfurt will increase – four will operate from Domodedovo Airport as before and two will take off and arrive in Vnukovo. As of June 3, Lufthansa daily flights from Moscow to Hamburg and Dusseldorf will be operated from Vnukovo.

From the same date Lufthansa is increasing its frequency from Moscow to Berlin. The opening of the new Berlin-Brandenburg Airport will see the start of a new twice-daily connection between Vnukovo and Berlin.

From 25 March Turkish Airlines is moving its Moscow operation from Sheremetyevo Airport to Vnukovo, becoming the second Star Alliance member after Lufthansa to move some or all operations to Vnukovo.

I can't find figures per year per terminal, but totally Vnukovo can receive up to 15 mln per year today with growing up to 25 mln after the second phase of terminal A will be completed.

In 2011 passenger flow decreased slightly due to the bankruptcy of some airlines and landing strips cross reconstruction last summer. It droped to less than 9 mln in 2011, but it will rise very fast in 2012.

Vnukovo International has welcomed the joint Lufthansa-Vnukovo news conference to announce preparations for scheduled flight operations by the German flag carrier out of Vnukovo International

"The addition of Vnukovo to the Lufthansa network, served from Berlin, as well as its Frankfurt hub segment, the fastest growing part of its network in all of Europe, is a testament to the trust we place in the Russian [air travel] market.", said Ronald Schulz, Lufthansa Regional Director Russia & CIS. "The year 2011 has been one of great success for us, with passenger numbers out of Russia growing at 20 percent. The additional services to Frankfurt will expand our offer to air travelers originating in Moscow and will also ring in a new demographic which has so far remained out of our direct reach."
