Kan Air on the radar for Russian jets

Russia's JSC United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has zeroed in on commuter airline Kan Air as the first Thai civilian operator of the Sukhoi Superjet 100.

Sukhoi needs to get up to a sustained rate of around 40 frames a year to properly deal with accumulated development costs and bank some capital for further development. They are near 30 now but need to do better than that.

On the other hand they are not faced with liquidation like Spamtanov was last week.

I think that the SSJ 100 project will never be profitable.

Dude, the net profit of Antonov Company is a compelling indicator of success.
BTW, Ukroboronprom finished 2015 with a net profit more than $100 million.

That points to an extra order from Cityjet so, they need some for themselves too.

But Sukhoi need to sell and make 40 a year, their order backlog is no more than 40 I would think. If they do so for the rest of the decade they will be looking at breakeven sometime in the 2020s perhaps.

The need a large Asian fleet sale sooner rather than later to get momentum.

I'm surprised Iran hasn't bought any. It seems a natural fit there, especially with their need to update their fleets and their good relations with Russia.

Maybe once Assad puts the terrorists down in Syria they might order a few to renew their fleet....

India also seems like a market that Russia should be aggressively courting.

Boeing has made 2 very aggressive sales of new 737-700s (not the max) in recent months, pricing them at around $25m each. That would be around what an SSJ costs. If they keep that sales campaign up it will certainly affect the smaller manufacturers with RJ type propositions.

You could even buy a brand new Spamtonov AN-158 for $25m as well.

Am I right that an SSJ can be adapted for Gravel Runways, surely Gazprom Aviation flies into some right messy places and a 737 cannot do so since the CFM56 engines were rolled out on that frame many moons ago.
