MKZ | Malacca International Airport

Malacca gets nod for RM65m runway extension
By Vasantha GanesanPublished: 2009/03/11

THE Malacca state government has received the green light from the federal government to extend the runway at Batu Berendam Airport, which is slated for completion in six months.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam said that the extension at the airport, which will be renamed Malacca International Airport, will cost RM65 million.

The extension is to accommodate larger carriers like Boeing B737 and Airbus A320, in line with its goal of making the historical state a top tourist destination.

"The runway will be extended to 2,200m from 1,800m now. It will cost RM65 million and the state will take a loan from the federal government for this," Mohd Ali said.

This is in addition to the RM135 million grant given to renovate and refurbish the airport, which is operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.

Mohd Ali said budget carrier AirAsia has indicated that it will fly to three destinations in Sumatra, Indonesia, namely Pekan Baru, Bukit Tinggi and Medan, from Malacca, once the runway is ready.

"After that, AirAsia plans to fly to Penang and Langkawi and a year after that to Jakarta, Palembang, Balik Papan and Kuching (from Malacca)," he said after witnessing an agreement-signing ceremony between Casa del Rio (M) Sdn Bhd and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd, and Sin Seong Hin Sdn Bhd.

"Firefly will also be coming in. We now only have Riau Airlines (operating at the airport)," he said, adding that he hopes other charter flights will also operate out of Malacca International Airport.

Mohd Ali said the state recorded a total of 7.2 million tourists last year, of which 6 million were domestic tourists. In the first two months of this year, Malacca has already welcomed 600,000 visitors.

He added that some 70,000 foreign patients sought medical treatment at the state.

"This is only 0.1 per cent of the 7 million rich people who are staying in Sumatra. We need to focus more on Sumatra ... with the new Malacca International Airport, we hope more patients will come here," he said.

Malacca airport to draw more regional tourists

KUALA LUMPUR: The completion of the Malacca airport runway extension project in the next six months will help attract more Indonesians into the state’s healthcare tourism sector, said Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

“Our main target is healthcare tourists; that is why we have the federal government approval on the extension.

“The health tourism business is very encouraging and it will bring a lot of income to Malacca and our country,” he told reporters after a signing ceremony between Casa del Rio (M) Sdn Bhd and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd for a RM50mil term loan facility to build a boutique hotel and serviced apartments in Malacca.

Mohd Ali said the healthcare treatment cost in Malacca was half that of Jakarta and by just capturing 1% of Sumatra’s population of seven million people, a huge benefit would be gained. Last year, Malacca attracted about 70,000 tourists from Sumatra.

Casa Del Rio group MD Tan Sri Syed Yusof Tun Syed Nasir (left) presenting a gift to Mohd Ali after the signing ceremony on Tuesday.

Once the runway extension project is completed, AirAsia Bhd will fly to three places in Sumatra - Pekan Baru, Bukit Tinggi and Medan - and domestically to Penang and Pulau Langkawi, the chief minister said, adding that the budget airline would later add Jakarta, Balikpapan, Kuching, Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu to its list.

Ali Rustam said the expanded airport would be named Malacca International Airport, with FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd expected to operate from there at a later stage.

Currently, only Lion Air from Indonesia operates at the airport.

Meanwhile, the RM102mil boutique hotel project by Casa del Rio is scheduled for completion by the end of next year.

Mohd Ali said with the hotel and four others under construction, the number of hotel rooms in Malacca would increase by about 1,500 rooms in three years, adding to the 10,000 rooms now.

Landasan terbang siap September

KUALA LUMPUR 10 Mac - Kerja memanjangkan landasan di Lapangan Terbang Melaka di Batu Berendam dijangka siap sepenuhnya dalam tempoh enam bulan lagi.

Ketua Menteri Melaka, Datuk Seri Mohd.

Dijangka Menjana Pendapatan RM1 Bilion Setahun
LTAM BEROPERASI SEPENUHNYA 1 NOVEMBER

AirAsia To Operate Flights From Batu Berendam Airport

MELAKA, March 31 (Bernama) -- Budget airline, AirAsia, will be asked to use aviation facilities at the newly-upgraded Batu Berendam Airport from May 1, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said today.

Mohd Ali said he will meet AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes soon on the matter.

The airport, given a RM131.5 million facelift, can be used from mid-April.

It can accommodate Boeing 737 aircraft and Airbus at half-load, he told reporters after inspecting work progress at the airport.

Upgrading work by Konsortium Uni-Integrated started in April 2007 to facilitate health tourist arrivals, particularly from Sumatra, who number close to 60,000 a year.

The airport will have a 7,000 square metre new terminal and will be equipped with facilities to receive domestic and international flights.

Mohd Ali said facilities for full load landing by Boeing and Airbus are expected to be ready in October, with the runway extended by 400 metres to 2,200 metres from 1,800 metres.

Fernandes, after a meeting with Mohd Ali in August last year, had said for a start AirAsia had identified six destinations -- four in Sumatra and two domestic -- from the airport.

Boeing aircraft will be used to land and take off for Palembang, Pekan Baru, Padang and Medan in Sumatra, Penang and Langkawi.

Fernandes however told the state government AirAsia's passenger and cargo planes will use the Batu Berendam Airport only at full load capacity.

Mohd Ali said the airport can handle 1.5 million tourists and rake in RM1 billion revenue when it is fully operational.

The Batu Berendam Airport, the country's first health tourism airport, has plans to handle flights from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Hong Kong, he added.

Melaka sasar 1.5 juta pelancong

Oleh AMRAN MULUP
utusanmelaka@utusan.com.my

TUN Mohd.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MELAKA 1 April - Kerajaan negeri menyasarkan kedatangan 1.5 juta pelancong menerusi Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Melaka (LTAM) yang dijangka siap sepenuhnya November ini.

Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd.

LTBB dibuka pesawat besar hujung tahun

the left side of the terminal is the departure hall while the arrival is on the right. i could see there are only 6 check-in counters. Cant see any shops also.
