I heard that some kind of Malaysia Air Festival to be held at Malacca International Airport some time in June this year. Last year it was held at Subang Skypark to celebrate 100 years of aviation in Malaysia.

We have to wait until Melaka Air buy or lease a bigger aircraft for this Malacca-Kuching route to happen. As of now, I assume that ATR72-500 may not be able to cover the distance. I believe this route has got potential as KCH is a major airport that needs more connectivity to other cities in Malaysia.

Melaka Air don't have AOC lah, how to lease aircraft? They are just glorified travel agency.

Typical AOC application could take up to one year just to get approval. Before AOC, you have to apply for ASP first.

Ongoing plans to make Malacca International Airport a regional hub

Ongoing plans to make Malacca International Airport a regional hub

MALACCA: The Malacca International Airport in Batu Berendam is indeed not a white elephant project as claimed by certain quarters including the state oppositions, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

He said efforts and plans have been ongoing to transform the airport into a regional hub for the Asia-Pacific airlines and calling it a ‘white elephant’ project was totally bizarre and uncalled for.

‘‘We do not have ‘gajah putih’ (white elephant) here.

Pleasant journey: Mohd Ali Rustam greeting passengers arriving on the maiden flight.

"But we do have Gajah Berang, Batu Gajah and Alor Gajah here,” he said after receiving the first batch of tourists arriving on the maiden flight of Sky Aviation for the Malacca-Tanjung Pinang-Malacca sector here recently.

A private Indonesian airline, Sky Aviation inaugurated its twice-weekly flights between Tanjung Pinang in Riau and Malacca to meet the surge in passenger traffic between the two cities.

Mohd Ali said that it was common for people to be sceptical in new or unfamiliar projects.

In the case of the airport, he said the state government has adopted a new concept of ‘building a supply that would subsequently create demand’ which would come from consumers with the right approach on promotion and attraction.

Other than the Klang Valley, he said Malacca recorded more than two million of visitors from the northern states of Peninsular and another 1.4 million visitors from Johor last year.

‘’There are 32 inter state buses that travel between Malacca and other northern states daily and we can see that there is potential for the state’s aviation industry to liven up tourism activities here.

‘’Besides visitors to Malacca, be they from Malaysia or international, will also have another better option on arriving here by saving travel time,” he said.

Currently, the Malacca International Airport services the Melaka Air, operated by Melaka Holiday Sdn Bhd in cooperation with Firefly; Wings Air and Sky Aviation, which filled the void left by the recent collapse of Riau Airlines.

The airlines provide weekly flights to Penang for its local destination and also Pekan Baru and Medan in Indonesia.

Mohd Ali noted that Sky Aviation also had plans to add another route next month, connecting Malacca and Jambi located on the east coast of central Sumatra.

Hmmm....., that welcome scene looks remarkably similar to the one of CM welcoming pax on FY flight from Penang
(notice too it's a Firefly plane in background, not of Sky Aviation)

Melaka Air rancang beli pesawat

Averaging 10 pax per day
Might as well get a DHC Twin Otter or similar and do multiple dailies

they said the air base in Sendayan won't have any runway, just heliports only. That's what they said la..government already acquired the land, but i doubt construction will start soon, first they have to level off the bukit there.

This airport is already in existence since 1952. Why only now so many people think that Malacca doesn't need an airport, this airport shouldn't exist, this airport is a white elephant etc. Why didn't they tell the British not to build this airport in 1950s since they know that Malacca doesn't need this airport and this airport, if built, is going to be a white elephant.
The government didn't build a new airport, just upgrade an existing airport by extending the runway and replacing the already outdated terminal with a new one. If you think that Malacca doesn't need an airport, what do you think the government should do with an airport that is already in existence yet not able to cope up with the demand of modern aviation industry?
