you can drive 50 in 5th, but you don't want to accelerate then. You have to shift back to 4th to gain speed. I usually shift to 5th at 65/70km/h, which is in the high 50's/low 60's in reality. There is some deviation between your speedometer and reality (in older cars up to 10km/h at 120km/h speeds).

Thanks Chris. Indeed. You don't accelerate, you just let the car cruise at constant speed.

Here in Spain when you drive inside a city (in 30-50km/h zones) you are continuosly changing the speed because the traffic lights, roundabouts, stresses and pedestrian crossings. Besides that isn't usual being in a 50km/h zone for more than 20 minutes except some pathways in very large cities like Madrid. You must be changing your gear continuosly... instead that I prefer play with the clutch pedal for save diesel (In diesel cars you can starting the movement in 1st and 2nd gear without using the accelerator pedal, so if I'm going to stop again some meters ahead, I don't use the accelerator).

See u! :P

P.S. I change too late while entering a motorway (1st to 40, 2nd to 60, 3rd to 80-90, 4th to 110 and then I use 5th), I prefer joining from the berm that joining at very low speeds.

you can do that with petrol-powered cars too. Only not as powerful as diesel cars.

Obviously I don't use 5th gear in stop start conditions or where I'm braking and speeding up. It's when I am cruising at constant speed. Sometimes thats for a few hundred metres or sometimes for a kilometre or two or more.
In a city like Madrid I probably wouldn't get much opportunity to do 50 in 5th.

I guess it depends on the engine's volume. My car would "cough" and shake like hell if I tried to cruise at 50 in 5th

Damn it, I want to try that!

That's no shame. Shifting earlier is better for saving fuel, but you don't want to get too slow merging in on the motorway. I also mostly merge in 3th gear.

I usually merge in 4th or 5th gear. As long as you drive faster than the trucks (90 - 95km/h), it's okay.

Typical style for a younger driver. - lower gear, high revs, fast acceleration bla,bla...

It really hasn't got anything to do with that... If I would shift to 4th gear at 50km/h I would merge with about 80-85km/h. With accelerating in 3th gear, merging in, and than shift to 4th gear, I merge in with 100-105km/h. Much better for the free flow of the traffic.

You must have a very low performance car then.

Don't worry mate. Do it the way you see fit.

I hate people merging too early... and that's really often here.

Yeah, in the Netherlands too. No offense, but they are often women.

Here it's mostly men, too eager to start driving fast that they can't even wait a few seconds to merge safely. What really pisses me off is when some smart guy overtakes me on the driving lane, while I still have to be on the accelerating lane b/c of him. I usually prevent it though, but it takes me merging too early as well.
