About Earth Hour Hong Kong
It's as simple as the flick of a switch. Web : http://www.earthhour.org.hk/eng/ What began as a campaign to get Sydney-siders to turn their lights off, has grown to become the world's biggest climate change initiatives. At 8:30pm on March 28 2009, people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. We're aiming to reach one billion people, more than 1000 cities, all joining together in a global effort to show that it's possible to take action on climate change and play a part in ensuring a sustainable future. Earth Hour, initiated by WWF in 2007, had 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses in Sydney, Australia turn off their lights for one hour. It caught the world's attention when its icons like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House turned their lights off. In 2008, 50 million people in 370 cities across 35 countries participated in Earth Hour. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome's Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square, New York, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour. If Sydney and 370 cities around the world could make it, Hong Kong can make it too. It is our turn to make a difference. On 28 March 2009, Hong Kong, will be joining Beijing and Shanghai to make history by joining Earth Hour, turning off the lights for one hour from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. It will be a time when Hong Kong joins other cities around the globe to turn our city dark, and for Hong Kong people to think about how we can change our lifestyles to reduce our impact on the environment, It will be a time when we rejoice and celebrate our determination to save our planet; it will be a time when we encourage our families, friends and colleagues to take actions on climate change. We can make a big difference with one simple action. So gear up for what will be the biggest and most important Earth Hour of our planet's history. Join us for Earth Hour 2009, and turn off your lights at 8:30pm on Saturday, 28 March for a brighter future. Sign-up here now! We will see hope in darkness. Top at switching off
Hong Kong Standard Monday, March 30, 2009 Hong Kong has come out on top as the Asian city with the most buildings taking part in the World Wide Fund for Nature's Earth Hour event on Saturday evening. More than 1,800 buildings, including Hong Kong Stadium and the International Finance Centre, went dark, according to WWF initial figures. "I hope people now see how small changes can collectively make a difference," the fund's director of development, Laura Weeks, said. WWF will announce the final results on April 6. |

Big guns ready to dim it down for the planet
Hong Kong Standard Monday, May 11, 2009 Some of the city's biggest landlords have signed Friends of the Earth's Dim It Charter to keep a midnight light curfew beginning on June 21. Riding on the success of the World Wide Fund for Nature's Earth Hour in March that saw 2.9 million Hongkongers participating, the latest campaign is to make efficient use of lighting a daily habit, FoE director Edwin Lau Che-feng said. "After a slow start in 2006, the growing `lights out' and `dim it' movements have gained momentum with more than 460 buildings and offices participating, up from 140 last year," he said. "We should go beyond the symbolic gesture of having lights off for a mere couple of minutes or hours by taking solid action." With 180 of their premises participating, the biggest retail landlord, Link Management, has signed on to switch off their exterior neon and other non-essential lighting. "Our premises are on the doorstep of 40 percent of the population so we'll be switching off at midnight every night to avoid light nuisances," a spokeswoman said. The Link will also be including the voluntary charter in its new leases, along with the New World Group. With the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which is under its management, also participating, NWG and its subsidiary will be committing 60 buildings and properties to the charter, including their Tsuen Wan, Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay towers, group director of corporate affairs Kwan Chuk-fai said. The Sino Group has committed 91 properties, along with its City Garden, Island Pacific, Royal Pacific and Gold Coast hotels, to the campaign. "Some tenants were a little hesitant at first, but it's an easy win-win situation with lower electricity bills on one hand and lesser demand leading to fewer emissions," a Sino Estates Management general manager said. |

You should be switching off your A/C or at least turn it up by a degree or two at least! That uses up a lot more power than a computer.
