Although unintentional, I was able to capture some of the ongoing platform door installations on the Ōedo Line. This is Roppongi Station, where the units had been erected but were not yet operational. These will enter service in a few days in mid-December.

I see on Wikipedia that this platform was built in 1995. Where did the Chuo Rapid trains go before then? Why was the Chuo Rapid Line built as it is (Terminal station, elevated above the rest of the platforms.) Was it a matter of a lack of space? Are there plans for further extension south in the future?

There was a bit of reshuffling in the mid-90s in order to make room for the Tohoku Shinkansen platforms to serve the shinkansen lines north of Tokyo (which were extended from Ueno to Tokyo Station). Effectively a whole bunch of lines were relocated west to make room, and since the Chuo Line was on the far western side, they had to create new elevated platforms for it on the western side of the station.

I doubt it will get extended south. To some degree, the Tohoku Through Line currently under construction between Ueno and Tokyo will allow the Tokaido, Joban, Utsunomiya and Takasaki Lines to provide an increased level of service to the south - at least as far as Shinagawa.

Oh - I did not realize that. I thought that only the Tohoku line was moved (Severed actually) to make room for the Tohoku Shinkansen. Is there anywhere you're aware of that shows a track diagram of Tokyo Station before/after the Tohoku Shinkansen was extended?

Another question I have about the Tohoku Juukan line under construction is, was any consideration given to putting a platform at Akihabara? I think that the Tohoku Line didn't have a station there even before it was severed, but it has only increased in importance thanks to the Tsukuba Express.

There is clearly not enough room within the station itself; however, there might be enough room north of the station, resulting in one platform being offset from the others, similar to how the Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku line is offset from the Yamanote line platform at Shibuya.

I guess they must have decided that this was either not feasible, not desirable, or too expensive. Nevertheless it seems to be a bit of a gap. Akihabara seems to me to be subjectively one of the more important stations on the Yamanote loop as far as transfers are concerned.

About relocation of JR Tōkyō Station's elevated platforms at that time,

the actual reason I've known is to make space for adaptation of Nagano Shinkansen thru service trains

(Also "Hokuriku Shinkansen" in the future; thru service via Jōetsu & Tōhoku Shinkansen).

In order to reconstruct one of existing conventional line platforms for Shinkansen trains to stop (Platform 22 & 23 nowadays),

platform layouts of conventional lines (Tōkkaidō Main Line, Yamanote Line...etc.) had to be shifted west.

So the most western platforms formerly used by Chūō Line rapid trains (Platform 3 & 4 nowadays) were also reallocated

for Yamanote Line trains (For Ueno, Ikebukuro) & Keihin-Tōhoku Line trains (For Ueno, Ōmiya) to stop,

then it became necessary to build higher viaduct tracks & platforms for the use of Chūō Line rapid trains.

This is one of the more widespread departure melodies, so you can actually find it at many other stations. It's called "JR-SH2-1", and is part of the "JR-SH" series of melodies, a basic set of melodies used at many stations under JR East's jurisdiction.

Some examples of stations using the same melody:

Ochanomizu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aTLjphul0o&hd=1

Komoro (Nagano Prefecture). This station is actually on the Shinano Railway.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY1i1YSYsUM&hd=1

Kōriyama, Tōhoku Shinkansen platforms
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMtQZGyDTmc&hd=1

If you go to 地方 (areas outside of Tōkyō), you can frequently hear the same melodies being re-used. My personal favorites for melodies are the following two:

Verde Rayo V2 (Tōkyō Station, Keiyō Line platforms)

Twilight (Shinjuku Station, Yamanote Line clockwise loop)
