So at least four lines being constructed currently in (mainly Western) Kazakhstan?

Looking at these lines on a map, it seems a new railway artery is being developed from the (now terminus) Zheskazgan towards Atyrau and the new line to Turkmenistan.

Are there any good maps/resources showing railways planned/under construction for Kazakhstan? I think most people should be able to make out a map in Cyrillic if that's the best source.

Are these lines planned to be primarily for freight or will any sleeper/Talgo trains run on these lines?

Thanks for posting about railways in Kazakhstan.

Tracklaying completed on trans-Kazakhstan rail link
15 Jan 2014

KAZAKHSTAN: Two new lines are on course to open later this year, after ceremonies in December marked the joining of the tracks being laid from each end of the routes.

According to national railway KTZ the lines are of an economic and social importance with it would be 'difficult to over-estimate'.

A ceremony at Tassay marked the meeting of tracks on the 493 km Shalkar - Beyneu western section of the 988 km trans-Kazakhstan route which is under construction through sparsely-populated steppe, desert, sand and salt marsh between Zhezkazgan and Beyneu.

Completion will cut around 1000 km from the east-west route between the Dostyk border crossing with China and the Caspian Sea port of Aktau.

More than 30 companies are working on the biggest railway project since Kazakh independence, led by Kamkor subsidiary Temirzhol Zhondeu with 1 000 staff. Equipment has been supplied by Geismar and Plasser & Theurer.

A second ceremony marked the joining of the tracks for the 214 km north-south route which is under construction between Arkalyk and Shubarkol.

Trans-Kazakhstan railway opens
26 Aug 2014

KAZAKHSTAN: President Nursultan Nazarbayev gave the signal to launch operations on east-west and north-south lines totalling 1 200 km on August 22.

Speaking to staff at stations along the routes from a teleconference in Zhezkazgan, Nazarbayev said the opening of two routes on the same day was a first for Kazakhstan, and the whole country would benefit from the reduction in freight transit times between Asia and Europe.

The 988 km Zhezkazgan – Saksaulskaya – Shalkar – Beyneu line running through sparsely-populated steppe, desert and salt marsh cuts around 1 000 km from the east–west route between the Chinese border and the Caspian Sea port of Aktau. From Aktau there is a link to the line to Turkmenistan which opened in May 2013 as part of a north–south corridor to Iran which is now nearing completion

Alstom increases stake in Kazakh joint venture
05 Dec 2014

KAZAKHSTAN: Alstom has acquired a further 25% stake in the EKZ locomotive production joint venture from national railway KTZ.

The restructuring now leaves Alstom as the lead shareholder in EKZ, which is based in Astana where it also has a loco production factory. KTZ and Russian supplier Transmash Holding each have a 25% stake. EKZ was established by the three partners in June 2010, since when it has received orders from KTZ for the supply of 200 KZ8A twin-unit freight locomotives and 95 KZ4AT single-unit passenger locomotives. In May this year, Azerbaijan’s national railway ADDY placed an order for 50 KZ8A locos.

Alstom announced on December 5 that EKZ has agreed a 25-year maintenance contract with KTZ for the KZ8A and KZ4AT fleets worth €1·3bn. The company reports that KTZ has 24 of the freight locos in traffic, while a KZ4AT locomotive has achieved 200 km/h during dynamic testing
