China-Kazakhstan grain passage opens
Shenzhen Daily
February 6th, 2017

A train carrying 720 tons of wheat from Kazakhstan reaches a logistic base in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, yesterday. The wheat will be transferred to a ship and head for Vietnam. This is the first wheat shipment from Kazakhstan to be sent to Southeast Asia via China, marking the opening of the China-Kazakhstan grain passage. In this way, Kazakhstan wheat will be sold in Southeast Asia at lower prices than that from Australia and with shorter delivery times.

With a gauge changer like the one recently installed in Brest-Litovsk ? Do the Talgo trains used in KZ have variable gauge axles ?

The 420 narrow-body cars and the 603 wide-body cars bought by KTZ have fixed Russian gauge (1,520 mm), but there are 46 cars that were tested in 2001/2005 and are still there. They are normal Talgo VI (Talgo 200), although adapted to the cold, and have displaceable rolling gauge (RD).

Hello!
A good train, although there are routes that become monotonous. I'm glad for the city.

Many greetings to all.
I´m from the Czech Republic a I have been in September in Kazakhstan and went by high speed train Talgo from Almaty to Astana. I made a trip report with a lot of pictures from this ride. It is in my native Czech language but I think pictures tell more than words. Trip report link: http://yirina.net/fotky_cesty/2017_K...2017_Talgo.htm

I read this forum for a years (specially the aviation part) but never contributed. So I think this experience from Kazakhstan may be interesting for those who are the fans of Kazakh Railways.
Regards Jirina

Nice report!

I ran it through Google Translate and was able to understand it quite well. Maybe I understood your meaning in the last paragraph about affordability of the Talgo for Kazakhs. It is considered expensive. If you purchase close to the time of travel (i.e. less than two weeks before travel) a Talgo service is usually priced mid-way between the cost of a slow train and a flight.

According to the World Bank, the GDP per capita for Kazakhstan was 7510USD in 2016. This is about 625USD per month. It's worth bearing in mind there is a big divide between prosperity in cities (especially Astana and Almaty) and the rural areas - the average salary in the main cities will be far higher than this.

Your first class ticket was 18824KZT - about 56USD on today's exchange rate. So that's a bit less than 10% of a salary based on GDP per capita. It's definitely expensive, but not half a salary as I think you mention in your report.
