Many people think those are Gibraltar plates, because Gibraltar also starts with a "G". But I believe Gibraltar has GBZ.

Correct. Gibraltar ones are yellow and have the GBZ country code.

Yesterday I've travelled from the town of Szombathely in Western Hungary to Budapest, on main roads 86 and 85, and motorway M1. I've seen the following plates:

A (cars, trucks), AZ (!) (one truck, no photo unfortunately), B (1 truck), BG (cars, trailers packed with used cars, trucks), BIH (1 truck), CH (few cars), CZ (cars, trucks), D (mostly cars and few trucks, coaches), DK (cars), EST (1 truck), F (2 cars), GB (cars), H (of course), HR (cars, trucks), I (cars and 1 truck), LT (trucks), LV (few trucks), MD (few cars, trailers with used cars), MK (1 truck), NL (cars, most of them caravans ), PL (loads of trucks, cars), RO (many trucks, trailers with used cars, cars), RUS (some trucks), SK (cars, trucks), SLO (cars, trucks), SRB (1 truck, cars), TR (trucks), UA (trucks, few cars)

That was all

Azerbaijan I have never seen an Azeri truck or car though. I wonder how they get to Europe... Via Russia? Dangerous territories in Dagestan. I doubt if the route via Turkey is possible, I thought borders between Armenia/Georgia and Turkey are closed? Maybe they drive via Iran and then Turkey.

This is my first posting so "Hi everyone and great site"

In my town in Cheshire,England we have the following foreign registered vehicles, mostly owned by overseas workers.

Poland (lots of these)

Latvia

Lithuania

Bulgaria

Estonia

I have also seen a Toyota Hiace camper conversion from South Africa on a campsite near Venice,Italy.

I also used to drive a truck throughout Europe as far as Turkey, Russia, and North Africa so have probably been spotted myself,

Got a few Chris but usually need a few before telling.

maybe this isnt the correct thread for long stories, heres a short one......

Travelling from Moscow to Polish border at Brest ,
3 trucks from same company in convoy,

Stopped for speeding (90 kph on road with 70kph limit)

Cop was driving an old Lada handpainted green

fine started at $100 each but eventually paid $10 total
The policeman then sold us Vodka from his car for $5

Dont know if this happens regularly now this was back in about 1993
