Iceland, Georgia, Azerbeijan, Iran, Jordan, Marocco. Those are the 'strangest' plates I have seen here in Europe. I have once spotted an Lybian car on Malta. And in the UAE I have spotted a Dutch and a Polish car!

In Slovenia: Canada and the US not rare (f.e. yesterday), Malta, Cyprus several times, Azerbaijan, Georgia (the country), Russia and Turkey often, Greece every now and then, Finland, Estonia, Portugal, Ireland, Albania, Kuwait, UAE (Dubai) ... Oh, my neighbor has Liberian plates.

In Switzerland: Gibraltar, Iceland, Brazil, Mexico (Nuevo León), Syria, Morocco ...

In Italy: Tunisia (by the Swiss border, not in Sicily) ...

In France: Algeria ...

I see plates from tiny European states quite often, like Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, but I can't remember seeing one from Andorra.

here in Mexico City you can find plates from every state of the U.S (spacially Texas)

The rarest plate i have ever seen here was from Argentina.

Yesterday I saw a canadian plate in a home depot parking lot.

Hmm. I've seen a license plate from Florida once. Also a Latvian license plate a few weeks ago here in town. Sometimes I see some Truckers from Portugal or Lithuania. I also saw a Estonian license plate once.

In Italy last year I saw a Finnish volvo driving along the coast near Genoa.

I've seen a camper from Andorra on a campsite in Primošten (Croatia). I wish I had taken a picture

Near any American military post in the US, you will occasionally see plates on cars registered in far away states and territories. Here in Maryland, I have seen plates from Alaska (5400 km), Hawaii (7800 km), and Guam (12,700 km).

I had Heidelberg (HD) plates in Germany, but had to turn them in before leaving the country. So I ended up with the old USA NATO plates when I arrived back in the US (Maryland). Now I display a replica of my German plates under the front MD plate.

In USA: Austria, Baja California (Mexico), Argentina, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, Alaska, and a bunch of other US plates. Once I saw a European-sized number plate in Spokane, but it was not EU.

In Ukraine: Oregon (USA), Germany, Latvia, Belarus, Georgia, Russia.

All the plates that I listed were real, and not souvenirs.

In Kansas (USA): Paraguay (old, rusted, but real, on a Nissan Maxima which had presumably made the journey north).

In Britain: Maryland plates (again, real).

Just to make a stronger impression, I should say that Belarus car was Smart, and the car from Russia had Siberian license plate (region 96)

I wish the Russian system was easier to recognize. It's a big difference, if a vehicle is from Moscow or Vladivostok.

What's with this 'I once saw a US plate...' or 'it was real'? You seriously haven't seen US plates more than once in Europe? In my city alone I've seen them some 20 times (last time two days ago). Maybe you don't watch plates so much, but you hardly miss the plate of the vehicle in front of you at least.

In the US:
One of the more unusual sightings were Hawaii, Germany, France, and some South American countries.

In Europe:
The most exotic ones were Australia (in Slovakia), Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran (in Paris).

American plates are not that unusual in Europe, esp. in Italy and Germany - to some degree probably because of the military presence in those countries. (even though most military cars have plates closely resembling those of their host country, but the make and model is usually a dead giveaway)
Canadian plates I've seen only once or twice.

I really meant once. Honestly

Here's what I've seen in Delaware:
Ireland
Germany
American Armed Forces in Germany
Chihuahua (Mexican state)
Some other Mexican state that I can't remember, and I kind of forget how it looks (might be Durango?)
A generic Mexico (said "Mexico" instead of a state plate)
Several Hawaiis
Countless Alaskas

The American Armed Forces in Germany license plates are the most interesting because they are from Europe, but they are for Americans. I've seen 4 of them so far, since Dover Air Force Base in Delaware is the main base to fly to Stuttgart. AAFIG plates are interesting as well because they are the European-style plate, but have the North American-style shape. Although, I have seen one of these plates that was oval-shaped, which makes it even more interesting.

Here's what an American Armed Forces in Germany license plate looks like:

What I've seen elsewhere:
Belarus, seen near Lancaster, PA
Panama, seen in Las Vegas
Northwest Territories, seen near Hamilton, ON

I don't understand why US and Canadian plates would be common in Hungary???

Surely no Hungarian would go to the trouble of buying a car in the US, registering it there and then shipping it over at large expense to Budapest?? Some people here in the UK privately import US cars but not many and in any case they register them once they get here, not before they leave America.

and I can't see many Americans driving up to Western Alaska, waiting for winter until the Bering strait freezes over and then driving across Siberia to Hungary for a vacation.

I don't think that many do that since there is no road to Western Alaska, nor to the very eastern end of Russia
