Seoul Subway Line 9

Line 9 will be opened in May, 2009.

Line 9 is planned to run east from Gimpo Airport (connecting to Line 5) along the south bank of the Han River, and will be opened in three phases. Construction of Phase 1, between Gimpo Airport and Gangnam, began in April 2002 and is due to be opened in 2009. Major transfer points on the first phase will be Dangsan (Line 2), Yeouido (Line 5), Noryangjin (Line 1), Dongjak (Line 4), and Express Bus Terminal (Line 3 & Line 7) Stations.

Phase 2 will run from Gangnam to Sports Complex Station on Line 2, while Phase 3 will run to Bangi-dong in eastern Seoul. While Phase 2 is planned to go ahead as scheduled, a Seoul Metropolitan Government website describes construction of phase 3 as being suspended in consideration of transport demand and financial situations.

It will be a 3-track subway providing express service on separate tracks similar to the New York Subway. All stations will be equipped with elevators, escalators and platform screen doors. It will be the first privately run subway line in Korea.

There were plans to eventually extend subway line 9 north from Gimpo train depot and across the Han River to meet the Line 3 and the Gyeongui Line at Daegok Station in Goyang as early as 2008.

Sin-Chang Liner (tentative name)

With Seoul Subway Line 1 extended to Sinchang, the need to get faster trains with lesser stations was increased so that Korail purchased express trains(EMU), so called TEC(Trunk line Electric Car), from Hitachi. As a result it looks alike Hitachi's A-trains Series 683. It's scheduled to be operated in May or June, 2009.

Great stuff. I lived in Korea for three years and was impressed by the way that the larger cities have begun ramping up investments in public transport. A few questions, though, if anybody knows the answer?

1. What is the Bansong LRT Line in Busan? The Gimhae Line has been under construction for a long time, but what's this other one? Is it the so-called extension of Line 3?

2. Is there a map of the Daegu monorail line in existence?

3. A number of smaller cities had been planning LRT systems: Ulsan, Jeonju, and maybe Gyeongju. Have these plans evaporated?

4. Weren't Gwangmyeong, Suwon, and Bucheon planning to build LRT systems similar to the ones under construction in Uijeongbu and Yongin (the Everline)? I thought I'd read that several such systems were planned for the cities in the Seoul region.

5. Did the monorail project in Sokcho fizzle out?

Yes it was originally the extension of Line 3, but it's built with LRT and it will have different operation system so that it will have its own name(maybe bansong line, but I don't know whether it's final name.) rather than the name of Line 3 extension. It's scheduled to be opened in November, 2010. And Gimhae line connects Busan with Gimhae ,so more precisely it's Busan-Gimhae LRT line. Gimhae line is scheduled to be opened in April, 2011.

2. Is there a map of the Daegu monorail line in existence?

I never heard of Gyeongju LRT. I've searched Gyeongju LRT but the latest news about it was metioned in 2005. I think it's cancelled or forgotten. Jeonju LRT was cancelled. And Ulsan LRT(Tram car type) is on-going project.(scheduled to be completed in 2015) At the same time Ulsan is pushing BRT line and they expect government aid at this project.

4. Weren't Gwangmyeong, Suwon, and Bucheon planning to build LRT systems similar to the ones under construction in Uijeongbu and Yongin (the Everline)? I thought I'd read that several such systems were planned for the cities in the Seoul region.

Seoul and Gyeong-Ki province have many plans to construct LRT lines here and there but most of them, except for Ui-Sinseol LRT and Nangok GRT, are still under consideration. Uijeongbu LRT is schduled to be opened in May, 2011 and Everline(Yongin LRT) in June, 2010.

5. Did the monorail project in Sokcho fizzle out?

Sokcho monorail? If you mean Gang-nam monorail, yes this project fizzled out because economic evaluation was not good and inhabitants were against it.

However, the link from there to the project page itself is broken. This probably means the project has been scrapped. (That seems to happen a lot with monorail projects.)

It's a shame the proposed Gangnam monorail project in Seoul was dropped. That area is congested and densely populated, and some type of circulator would have been very useful.

I thought Sokcho is Seocho-Gu in Gang-nam cause I've never heard of Sokcho monorail project. Some results from web-searching say Sokcho monorail project is..... I don't know where it is. The only news about it is this. In short if Sokcho monorail would be built, K-AGT will be suitable to this line. No further information about this project.

It's a shame the proposed Gangnam monorail project in Seoul was dropped. That area is congested and densely populated, and some type of circulator would have been very useful.

But the result of economic evaluation was not good enough to move ahead with the project.

Pyongyang has trams, trolleybuses and two metro lines. Pyongyang-Metro.com has as much detail as anyone has been able to piece together.

FarRail Tours, a German company which runs railfan tours to various unusual destinations, including North Korea, has some photo galleries showing metro trains, trams and trolleybuses in Pyongyang.

Chongjin reportedly has a tramway, while several towns and cities are known to have trolleybus systems, including Wonsan and Sinuiji.

Unfortunately No tram or tramway in South Korea since 1968. Now Ul-San Metropolitan City has a plan to build tram-type LRT.
