Subway Line 9 to Open Friday

Quote:
The ninth subway line linking Gimpo Airport and Gangnam in southern Seoul will open at 7:00 pm, Friday, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said Monday. It comes after repeated delays due to technical problems.

``With all the problems involving fare correction programs fixed and all safety issues cleared, we've decided to open the new line on July 24,'' the city said in a statement.

The city originally planned to open the line on June 12, but had to delay the ribbon-cutting due to malfunctions in the fare charging system.

Trains will start services on the first 25.5-kilometer section of Subway line 9, from Gimpo Airport to Sinnonhyeon in southeastern Seoul. The line will reduce the commuting time connecting northwestern Seoul and southern Seoul through an express train that stops at nine stops, taking only 30 minutes to get to Gangnam from the airport.

The basic fare will be 900 won, the same as existing subway lines. The new trains have been installed with wider seats and low hand straps for children, and have had doors removed between carriages for easier movement for the disabled. All stations are equipped with powder rooms and diaper changing facilities as well as children's toilets.

Subway line No. 9 runs from today

Quote:
Seoul City's subway line No. 9, otherwise known as the gold line, will start running today from 7 a.m., connecting Gimpo International Airport with Gangnam.

The segment that opens today runs from Gimpo Airport to Shin Nonhyeon Station.

The 25.5-kilometer segment has 25 stops including six stations where passengers can transfer to and from other subway lines. Those six are Gimpo Airport (line No. 5), Dangsan (line No. 2), Yeouido (line No. 5), Noryangjin (line No. 1), Dongjak (line No. 4) and the Express Bus Terminal (lines No. 3 and 7).

The city introduced for the first time express trains that stop at only nine stations, allowing passengers to reach Shin Nonhyeon from Gimpo in half an hour.

The Airport Railroad or AREX is just steps away from the Gimpo Airport station, allowing passengers from Gangnam to reach Incheon Airport in an hour.

The basic fare for the subway line No. 9 has been tentatively set at 900 won for those using T-Money cards.

Seoul City and its affiliated company, which has the right to run the new subway line for the next 30 years, plan to reset fares after tracking the number of passengers for a year.

The metropolitan government plans to complete the second segment, from Shin Nonhyeon to Sports Complex Station (in Jamsil) by 2013, and the third segment from Sports Complex Station to Bangi-dong by 2015.

The new subway line, which was previously scheduled to start running last month, goes into service today, as the city government needed more time for last-minute alterations to the automated fare system.

A new trasfer center for public transportation opened on July 25 in front of Seoul station. I'd posted about Nokdong station before, but I would like to post it again.

Subway to Allow Bicycles on Board

Quote:
By Kwon Mee-yoo
Staff Reporter

From October, bicycle-specialized compartments will appear on Seoul subways. Photos show a bicycle ramp and bike lockers installed at Seokgye Station on line no. 6. The bottom is an illustrated image of a compartment remodeled to accommodate bicycles./ Courtesy of Seoul Metropolitan Government

Bicycle lovers will be able to take their bikes onto subways using special bicycle compartments and bike-only gates on Sundays from October.

Seoul City announced its plan to allow bicycles on subways as part of its campaign to encourage bike riding.

The pilot operation will start on Oct. 4 and bike-only cars will be operating on Sundays and holidays until next April.

The city will fix problems found during the pilot operation and expand the service to Saturdays from next May. Ultimately, the bike compartments will be available on weekdays, except during rush hour, by 2012.

The special compartments, located in the front and rear cars, will have two bike racks instead of the standard seven-person chair.

Forty trains on subway lines no. 1-8 will have bike carriages by October, and a total of 359 trains will be equipped by next April.

Ramps for easy conveyance of bicycles and special gates for bike riders will be installed at 38 stations, including City Hall Station, by the end of the year.

Bicycle storage, which is currently installed only at Seokgye Station on line no. 6, will be expanded to include eight more stations including the Sports Complex Station on line no. 2 and Samgakji Station on line no. 4 and 6.

"This is the first attempt in the nation to allow bicycles on urban subways and it will encourage more people to ride bicycles," a city official said.
