Historic City Buildings converted into residential use.

It is quite common for a historic highrise building to be converted into a residential building. An example of a building that has been converted into such a use is the 13-story Eastern Columbia Building in Los Angeles, which was in the mid-2000s converted from an office building into 150 condominium units.

Asia Insurance Building (1955)

It was once Singapore's tallest building. It has been converted from office use into residential use as serviced apartments and renamed Ascott Raffles Place.

After makeover

Some historical pictures from www.a2o.com.sg

It was built when Singapore was still a colony.

Alot of historical buildings in Downtown LA are converted to lofts. I saw signs like Rent a Landmark!

Hong Kong
Chan Au Big Yan Home for the Elderly
The building was opened in 1923 under the Sanitary Department (then Urban Services Department). Only a small portion was used as a temporary fire sub-station with only 10 firemen and one motor pump. It then became the Kennedy Town Fire Station and renamed Western Fire Station in 1937. It is unknown when the building ceased to be a fire station, which then became USD's staff quarters and a primary school was run by the USD Staff General Association inside the premises in 1951-76. The building was taken over by the Social Welfare Department in 1986, which then converted it into an elderly home managed by the Po Leung Kuk.

Columbia's first skyscraper, the National Loan and Exchange Building (now the Barringer Building) was built in 1903 and is now made up of apartments.

It is the red brick building with the white around the top in this photo.

The 1940 Tapp's Department Store building, an art moderne treasure, was converted to apartments as well.

If the Richfield Tower had not passed away in the late 60s for the ARCO Twin Towers. The Richfield Tower would have been converted into lofts and the ARCO Tower would have been constructed in some other location,

The Continental Building in St. Louis has been converted into 107 residential units in 2002 after being vacant since 1979.

I think this is pretty much the trend (or it was until the economy collapsed) for most American cities.

The apartment I'm living in now was once a furniture factory/showroom.

Before that I had a huge loft in a building that used to be an automotive showroom/garage.

Before that I was living in an apartment from an historic cotton mill building.

Before that my school dorm was a converted hospital.

See what I mean! LOL

I have no hard evidence, but I would suggest that at least 80-90% of all of my city's downtown residences are within older buildings that have been converted from commercial/industrial to residential use.

Some Toronto buildings:

Queens Quay Terminal
Built in 1926, converted in the early 80's. It's actually several things:
Quote:
Queen's Quay Terminal was a cold storage facility, the Toronto Terminal Warehouse, built in 1926 by Moores & Dunford (NYC) and converted to a condo/mall complex in 1983 (The southwest section was demolished and forms the south end of the parking lot between Queen's Quay Terminal and the EnWave PowerPlant). The renovations by Zeidler Roberts added 3 floors to the original 10 floor structure, for a total of 750,000 square feet (70,000 m2) of space. The New York Times mentioned it as an example of successful revitalization efforts in Toronto during the 1980s.[1]

The Art Deco facility houses a shopping mall that includes a Sobeys grocery store. It is also home to the Premiere Dance Theatre and the Museum of Inuit Art.

Tip Top Tailors Building
Built some time in the 1920's, converted in 1972 and 5 stories were added.

There are school and warehouse loft conversions all over the city, this is the most recent one. Jacksonville has a good bit of old building stock, especially when it comes to schools and institutional buildings.

Palacio Alcorta, in Buenos Aires. It originally was a luxury car dealership ("Resta Hermanos", associated with Chrysler) in Barrio Parque, an exclusive high-class neighbourhood of the city. Designed by the italian Mario Palanti, also author of the Palacio Barolo (100 mt. tall) and the Palacio Salvo (in Montevideo, Uruguay), it had its own test drive on the roof!! Later, it was transformed into military offices ( !?) and in 1993 the building was auctioned and remodeled by MSGSSS. Fascinating story...

The gasometers in Vienna have been converted into residential use to a design by four different architects, one for each of the gas holders.

It was indeed quite interesting to know about how the historic city buildings have been converted to the residential use after undergoing some remodeling. I must say it would indeed be a matter of pride to be living in one of those historic remodeled buildings. It would just add to the value of living.

Rugheimer & Becker stråhattfabrik, Stockholm

This straw hat factory was recently redeveloped. The factory consists of three buildings; one residential building facing Scheelegatan, one fcatory building facing Pipersgatan and one factory building in between them both. All were converted to modern residential units. Units vary between 1-7 rooms.

The residential building facing Scheelegatan
