What could become of this...... ?
....area down at the southern end of George St in the CBD ?
Currently it's full of this horrible brown crap. Hideous. What is the height limit there ? I'd love to see a developer amalgamate the site, bulldoze the lot, with a couple of cutting edge 235m towers built with the podium crossing above the street that currently cuts through the middle ( George to Pitt St's ). In the podium would be a Singapore Sim Lim style electronics and computer centre with office and resi rising above it. Easy done ! ![]() image hosted on flickr

The height limit is a ridiculous 50m, which I suspect is less than at least four of the buildings in that picture...

which bldgs are you talking about?
the 2 storey bldgs to the left can be bulldozed and replaced with 50m builidng.you couclnt put anything big there anyhow due to small fsr. the white bldg in centre is the heritage listed 1930-Gardiner House.

The rubbish there has to go. As I pointed out in another thread recently, Sydney Central is there. It's 500ft and why cannot it have some neighbours of that height at least.

I'd be happy for every building in that photo to be demolished.

I'm talking about demolishing EVERY building visible in that picture apart from Gardiner House.
The Mckell building has the worst forecourt to a skyscraper that I've ever seen, just basically a wall of stairs and pebblecrete. Absolutely horrible The 2nd worst pedestrian friendly forecourt I've seen is actually at the front of that group of towers in the far right hand side of the pic - those mid rise modern towers down the bottom of Elizabeth St Surry Hills - shame shame shame. |

I am not a fan of the Centenial Plaza towers. I see it every day changing trains. Bland and at street level lifeless.
With the exception of Australia Square, public squares at the base of our towers have been a miserable failure, no matter what work is done. Very windy places too. Imagine meeting your mates in one in June-July when its freezing at all hours with no sun.

Centennial Plaza has plenty of sun - it's a miserable failure because it's a shithole and there's no reason anyone would want to be there. Does anyone have any photos of the warehouses that used to be there? My grandmother made gloves there during the war.

Yup, Centennial Plaza has sun but there is no reason for being there. The rail bridge creates a psychological barrier between Belmore Park and that side. Why would anyone meet there when you can meet in Belmore Park or that concourse at Central Station?
To me, World Square is a failure because of the windiness. Sure, you can attract extra patronage by linking George St with corridors and arcade but the centre of it is pretty lifeless. MLC Centre's plaza facing the Martin Square attracts a lot of crowd especially the anti-U.S protesters. lol. |

Centennial Plaza is on the site of a former brewery: Resch's?
Correction: there yer go: Tooths says Cul, Toohey's says drawing. Whatever, it was a brewery. Glove making probably occurred across on the other side of Mary Street where a lot of the old brick buildings still exist if my memory serves me right. the Tooths Standard Brewery occupied the centenial plaza site on elizabeth st from 1875.
The 5storey/80ft brewery tower was tallest building in Sydney . In 1881 it was first building in sydney to house a passenger lift which was donated from the ill-fated garden palace. image hosted on flickr

The brewery shut down in the 80's which led to the construction of the towers. They also had a brewery in South Dowling St as well, redeveloped into apartments not long after that. Reschs is now owned by CUB and brewed in Melbourne.

The former brewery site on Sth Dowling Street, Redfern, opposite Moore Park, is now the site of Moore Park Gardens. Some of the old brewery buildings were retained and integrated into the development.

Telstra's Haymarket exchange is a pretty ordinary building, but it handles a lot of services for city south, it would take a bit of effort to move.

Don't bother demolishing an exchange. It just cannot be done. Just refurbish it.
