Moving to New York City, where is a good place?
My mom is moving to New York City from Wilmington, NC where is a good place to move? she doesnt want to live in a burrough, unless its cheap and doesn't have much crime. Also she wants to pay under $1000/month for rent and be pretty close to NYC. Been considering Hoboken, and other places south of there like red bank and fair haven, where would be a good place to move for her and why? also she doesnt like too much hustle and noise. She likes more laid back beach places

I don't know about a great or good condition place for 1000$ a month in NYC , most of my friends pay 1500-3000$ a month and live in good condition apartments, has she tired Jersey City , theres alot places for under 1000$ a month a are great. Hoboken is a little Pricey , and cramp, no parking , its a double Parked City. Anywhere on the NJ Side bordering Manhattan aka the NJ Gold Coast , she can find a under 1000$ apartment , unlike New York City itself. Also try Weehawken , Union City , Fort Lee , Englewood, close to New York City & have alot of Apartments ad great Transit. In Jersey City , you don't need a car to get around , like NYC. same is for the whole NJ Gold Coast , Buses , Light Rail , PATH (subway) , Commuter Rail via Hoboken Terminal, and NY waterway keep you well connected to the region and NYC

Laid back beach places: Long Beach south of Park Avenue in Nassau County. If you wait a little while I'll have a full picture tour of the city of Long beach.
EDIT But it won't be $1,000 a month lol.

I think if she wants low key, close to the beach, somewhere in Nassau County. I think the affordability, proximity to the beach and LIRR would be pluses.
Honestly, I'd take Jersey City for the price, convenience, potential and less hectic pace. Red Bank and Fair Haven are a bit far if her commute is to NYC. A number of people do it, but it's kinda far, southeastern LI is about as far as I'd want to be if convenience were a high priority. |

Since when has this become realestate.com?
:And seriously, tell your mother to look elsewhere for what she wants, you don't come to nyc for the beach, cheap rent, and short commute. I don't know how you do things in the deep south but it might not suit your lifestyle.

bridge city? I don't get it.
Ohhhh. All the things you mentioned; developments, transportation and yeah bridges and infrastructure are what this board is for--primarily. I don't see any problems with your question but what 3tmk is trying to say is that your question is not priority for our members although some of us will be more than happy to help you out given the type of question it is. I agree with Novawolverine on the South Shore of Long Island's Nassau County. Neighborhoods where she may be able to find an apartment for $1,000 a month would be Seaford, Bellmore, Baldwin, Oceanside, Island Park, East Rockaway, Valley Stream, Lynbrook, Hempstead or Freeport. Rockville Center is a bit pricey. Long Beach would be ideal and she might find a basement apartment out there but the rest is expensive- boardwalk accessable apartments, west end, canal zone, etc., etc. The Long Island Rail Road is very efficient and has several lines stretching all over Long Island. The bus system, if you checked my NYC Metro tour, is extremely extensive and you can find it all over the county. I wouldn't suggest the North Shore of Long Island because it is way too much money to rent up there let alone finance a home.

No what I mean is that you don't expect to come to an urbanism-related website to see people ask where to find a place for their mommy to rent, what tools to use to fix your front porch, or the best lawnmower out there. It isn't complicated.
There are so many better suited places on the internet for that.

Well 3tmk, I like to help ppl w/ questions about New York City and it's environs. Infact I created a 170 thread tour for that purpose...partially.
Royal Rose...check out my tour "Naked New York" http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2202 maybe you guys can take a look around the Nassau county tours and see which areas you may want to feel around. 3TMK I know this isn't city-data and thank god for that. Still it is a somewhat relevant topic and at least he didn't go into the global forums to ask it, he came here to the NY section. Maybe he'll find that this site floats his boat and he'll take a deeper look at it and contribute more than just 1 question...we can't just shoosh them and impolitely tell them they're not in the right place (which is true) and I'd like to invite Rose to take a look around at the site. We love contributions but if you just want to spectate than by all means. I'm going to move this one anyway to the stickied thread meant for it.

I am visiting NYC this year and the options are the last week of may or the week after.
I read the the 31st of may is Memorial Day. Here in Europe we have a similar day to show respect to the solders who fought in the second world war. This is a sad day, shops are closed and the military marches threw the streets. I read on wikipedia that the shops are open in NYC. Is it smart to visit NYC on Memorial Day? What can I expect? |

I wonder how many International SSC members have visited New York. There must be more tourists flowing through that city than anyone can comprehend ?..........I count myself lucky to have visited twice 2000 + 2007.....not bad for just a poor guy on the opposite side of the world : )

Has someone from you ever been to the skyscraper museum in Battery Park? If so, is a visit worth it?

Ive been there , its not as good as the old one. Really tiny about the size of my basement
and they charge admission. The Jewish History museum across the street is worth it.

Am going back to New York in late '10 for a few months. Am hoping it will snow, or at least be very cold!
![]() Will be staying in Gramercy/Flatiron as I tend to do, and am very much looking forward to going back, and eventually moving there. Yey me? |
