Absolutely great. This will stay forever as one of the best regeneration schemes in London.

Btw I didn't know it was going to open in 2011.

Couple of shots from that video.

That view from the centre towards the stadium is fantastic.

Stratford goes for gold with £3m Olympic sculpture to lift image

The first artist's views of a £3 million sculpture which will be wrapped around the centre of Stratford in time for the 2012 Olympic Games were revealed today.

The line of 180 polished titanium “leaves” mounted on metal posts has been designed to sway in the breeze.

It will run for 450 metres along Great Eastern Road, past Stratford station and the main shopping centre, and will be an average of 16 metres tall.

It is hoped that the sculpture, named The Shoal, will create “a sense of arrival and drama” in the run-down town centre and shield visitors from the sight of heavy traffic and dingy buildings.

The leaves will be in a range of seasonal colours from spring green, through burnt yellow to autumnal gold and deep orange. To add to the effect, The Shoal will be uplit at night.
It will be the largest kinetic — or moving — sculpture in Britain.

A report on the project warns that at present the streets trapped within the traffic-logged Newham gyratory system — dubbed “the island” — are scruffy and depressing, yet they will also provide the first impression for millions of visitors to the area in 2012.

“In its current condition, Stratford town centre runs the risk of being overshadowed by adjacent new developments,” warns the report. “The island needs to be more exciting to attract new businesses, residents and visitors.”

Other improvements include an upgrade of Meridian Square and tinted cladding for the façade of the “blank and anonymous” Stratford Picture House.

The Broadway will be repaved and the report also suggests increasing rents there to encourage smarter shops, along with a crackdown on
illegal parking.

Work on the project is expected to start this summer and be completed by late next year.

Dreadful sculpture

I read that it was meant to be London's answer to the Eiffel Tower. It doesn't have 1/10th of the style or beauty that the Eiffel Tower has. Even in terms of modern, avant garde architecture, it's bad.

Westfield confirms lettings in Stratford

Westfield has confirmed a raft of lettings at its Stratford shopping centre, which will open next year.

It has now let 60% of the space at the £1.45bn shopping centre close to the Olympic site in east London.

Some of the larger format retailers to have signed include Primark, Next, US retailer Forever 21, Topshop, H&M, Monsoon, River Island, WH Smiths, Boots and Esprit.

Michael Gutman, Westfield UK & European managing director said: “With stores trading so strongly at Westfield London and the striking quality of the space being constructed at Westfield Stratford City, the larger format component, which is roughly 30% of the scheme’s area, is now virtually fully committed.

"With the anchors and larger format stores now largely in place, leasing focus is now on the specialty stores where demand has also been strong.”

Westfield Stratford City will be anchored by John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and an all-digital Vue cinema.

The news comes as Westfield Group announces its first quarter results.

Westfield said it would start around A$1bn (£604m) in development projects this year, including in the United States, as market conditions were improving.

The company reiterated its dividend forecast of 64 cents a share for 2010, down from 94 cents last year, following a cut in its payout ratio to 70 to 75% of operational earnings.

Shape of shopping to come

-- Link to Wharf.co.uk article --

Epic is the only way to describe the Westfield Stratford City development.

Set to be the largest shopping centre in Europe, and with the Olympic Park next door, the former disused industrial rail space is currently a building site of mammoth proportions.

Dubbed as the prestigious gateway to London's Olympic Park, Stratford City is one of the largest urban regeneration projects ever undertaken in the UK.

John Burton, Stratford City director, said: "Westfield Stratford City will create a metropolitan hub for east London incorporating retail, office, hotel and leisure space when it opens next year.

"The £1.45billion investment we're making is a significant part of the regeneration of the area and the legacy which will be created by the London 2012 Olympic Games.

"The project is based on long-term fundamentals including the catchment potential and transport links surrounding the scheme.

"Stratford City will include more than 300 brands including the unrivalled anchor line-up of John Lewis, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Vue. The external aspect of the scheme, together with its extensive infrastructure network, means it will create an industry showcase when the eyes of the world turn to London in 2012."

The shopping centre and the Olympic Park together form a 700-acre development, with Stratford City becoming a core component of East London's Olympic legacy, permanently situated next to the largest urban park created in Europe for more than 150 years.

The Wharf donned hard hats and high-vis jackets to take a tour of the site in Stratford to see how the development is taking shape.

At 1.9million sq ft, it took a few hours to wander round the empty shell of what is to be the shopping mall. The 300 shopping units are already in place and it was easy to visualise store fronts and shoppers bustling around the huge expanse.

There are sight lines out to the Olympic Park for shoppers to admire and the clever open plan design means wherever you are standing in the mall, you can always see around 60 brands at one time.

Laura Passam, Westfield's corporate affairs executive, said: "The Canary Wharf market will be important to the project's success. The type of anchor stores already on board tells you about the type of shopper expected. But we also have high street retailers like Primark and Topshop alongside more boutique style shops to cater for the whole catchment area - the four million people within 45 minutes of us.

"We hope to create a Marylebone High Street crossed with Spitalfields feel. This will be an east London shopping experience with outdoor independent stores alongside the big names."

Art and culture will be integral to the experience: from the striking architecture to new retail concepts, cultural collaborations, events and art installations.

Stratford City has also been designed to achieve excellence in environmental sustainability, with stringent guidelines imposed on its construction. Plans include a self contained cooling and heating system, rainwater harvesting and green roofs to provide a habitat for wildlife.

The development will connect two major transport hubs: Stratford Regional Station, served by the Central and Jubilee lines and Stratford International. It also hosts national rail services from East Anglia and Essex, London Overground and the DLR. Further enhancing its reach it will benefit from two DLR stations, along with Kent Fastlink - a new high speed network that will connect Kent and St Pancras. Crossrail will stop at Stratford when it opens in 2017, with 24, 1,500-seat trains per hour between Heathrow and Woolwich.

The shopping centre is now 60 per cent leased or committed with around 18 months to go before its 2011 opening.
