Rate Toronto's New 5 Star Hotels
I've been hearing lots of Talk about the new luxury hotels going up in Toronto. All are claiming they will be 5 star hotels. From what we know so far, how would you rate these new developments/proposals? Put them in order from #1 to #5. Also which do you think will be REAL five star hotels?
The hotels are: Trump Hotel in the Business District, Shangra La in the Business District, Ritz Carlton in the Entertainment District, Four Seasons in Yorkville and 1 Bloor Hotel at Yonge St. Here is my guess. 1 The Four Seasons ***** 2 The Ritz Carlton ***** 3 Shangra La **** 4 Trump Tower **** 5 1 Bloor E *** With the slowdown in construction/development threads, we need new posts to keep us busy until things pick up. ![]() So guys, what do you think? |

You forgot The Hazelton Hotel on Yorkville, that is absolutely gorgeous and is for sure a 5 star!

Off the top of my head, I would say that might be a pretty representative ranking.... smaller hotels like the Hazelton and le St-Germaine might be considered boutique hotels....

No, I don't think the 1-5 represents stars... I think he means they are all 5 star, but in what order of luxury would we rank them? The Star system of ranking hotels is totally arbitrary these days, especially when a hotel in Dubai bestowed a ridiculous 7 stars on itself, when the system clearly maxes at 5.

The star system is quite imprecise and generally applies to the number of staff members per room as well as the facilities within the hotel (similar to rating cruise ships). The contradiction comes with scale: a Ritz with its massive ballrooms and business travellers is quite different from a small boutique hotel like The Hempel in London. Both will be 5 star, but The Hempel will definitely feel more "luxe".
If we want to vote on the Toronto hotels architecturally, I think its clear that Trump will be the weakest architecturally. 1 Bloor shouldn't even be on the list as I don't believe a 5-star hotel was ever promised (or is likely). I think both the Ritz and Shangri-La will be quite beautiful. The Four Seasons? Well, let's put it this way: another Peter Clewes glass tower. |

I figured The Hazelton was already open and St. Germain never made claims to be a 5 star hotel, where as the others all claimed they were going to be 5 star.
I rated them in the order I think they'll rank over-all. (after they are completed and rated by a reputable source) I'm sure all of them wont be 5 star hotels. It will be interesting to see which one gets that status. |

The term "5 star" is used broadly, and loosely around the world, and means completely different things as well as sometimes being an outright fib!

Well...as I have been to none of them...
I am guessing that The Four Seasons will be eight-star, Trump minus 275 stars and the others in-between. |

I for one can't wait for these hotels to open up and have some more first class restaurants inside them. 5-star hotel means generally a few top restaurants and an awesome bar as well.

Aren't there actually no five star hotels in the city at the moment?
