Reds score six to win trophy
Toronto FC beat Montreal Impact 6-1 at Stade Saputo on Thursday night to win the first trophy in the club's short history and qualify as Canada's representative in the Preliminary Round of the CONCACAF Champions League. The Reds won the Nutrilite Canadian Championship on goal differential after scoring six for the first ever time. Dwayne De Rosario scored a hat-trick, Amado Guevara got two and Chad Barrett also scored as the Reds fought back after conceding an early goal. Toronto went into the game knowing they had to win by four goals to pass Vancouver Whitecaps at the top of the standings and they had most of the early possession without threatening the Montreal goal. In the early stages Danny Dichio headed wide from a Sam Cronin cross and Amado Guevara also headed wide from a Jim Brennan delivery. Toronto's task was made even tougher in the 24th minute. Defender Nick Garcia, playing in his first Canadian Championship match, tripped Peter Byers in the six yard box and referee Carol Anne Chenard awarded the Impact a penalty. Tony Donatelli rolled the penalty into the right corner to score from the spot. The Reds were level just before the half hour mark with an opportunistic strike from Dwayne De Rosario. Impact goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic punched Guevara's corner straight to De Rosario who scored with an overhead kick from close range. Toronto could have taken the lead soon after as De Rosario turned provider for Dicho, but a bullet header went wide of the right post. In the 38th minute Pablo Vitti had an overhead kick cleared off the line by Byers, but a minute later the Reds were in front when De Rosario scored his second of the game. Jim Brennan crossed from the left and found De Rosario 18 yards out. His shot deflected off Elkana Mayard to make it 2-1 five minutes before the break. Toronto almost added a third before the half ended but Dichio blazed over the bar from 15 yards out. Just four minutes after half time, De Rosario had a hat-trick. Chad Barrett, on as a half time substitute for Pablo Vitti, split the Impact defence and sent De Rosario through on the goalkeeper. The three time MLS All-Star kept his cool to slide the ball home and make it 3-1. Just before the hour, Pierre Rudolph Mayard almost pulled Montreal back into it but Stefan Frei made a good save. The goals kept coming for Toronto FC. Amado Guevara curled in a free kick in the 69th minute to give the Reds a 4-1 advantage and bring them to within one goal of a score line that would win them the tournament. With Toronto throwing men forward, Montreal had a couple of opportunities to score on the counter, but with seven minutes to go, Barrett grabbed his second goal of the tournament heading in from Guevara's corner. That would have been enough for Chris Cummins' side, but they weren't finished. As the game entered stoppage time, Guevara scored his second of the night and Toronto FC's sixth to wrap up the win and the trophy. The Honduran stepped to the side of the defender and curled into the bottom corner after an intelligent flick from Barrett. The rain was pouring down as the final whistle blew, but the Toronto players celebrated the win in front of the Reds fans who had made the trip along the 401 to support their team. Dwayne De Rosario was named the tournament MVP and Toronto FC now move on to play Puerto Rico Islanders in the Preliminary Round of the CONCACAF Champions League in late July. |

this was the greatest day in TFC history so far. No one believed they could possibly win by 4 goals!
I'm so glad I believed in them and watched the whole game!

![]() from the tsn website: http://tsn.ca/soccer/story/?id=282277 TORONTO FC WINS CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP WITH STUNNING VICTORY MONTREAL -- Toronto FC pulled off the impossible Thursday night, reaching its lofty target of a four-goal margin of victory by downing the Montreal Impact 6-1 to claim the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. Forward Chad Barrett's second goal of the championship in the 83rd minute made it 5-1 and gave Toronto FC the margin it needed to overtake the Vancouver Whitecaps for first place in the standings. Toronto tripled the number of goals it scored in the first three games of the championship combined in one night. The Whitecaps were present at rain-soaked Saputo Stadium, sitting among the announced crowd of 11,561 and watching as the title was ripped from their grasp. Dwayne DeRosario paced the Toronto attack early on with three goals, while Amado Guevara notched Toronto's fourth and sixth goals of the game. DeRosario jumped into the adoring arms of hundreds of Toronto FC supporters after the final whistle as the Impact dejectedly watched them celebrate on their home field. When the Impact opened the scoring in the game's 23rd minute on a penalty by midfielder Tony Donatelli, Toronto's already daunting task seemed to be nearing impossible. But with only pride to play for and with a league game coming up against Vancouver on Saturday afternoon, Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos decided to field a team largely made up of subs, including goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic. Toronto FC took full advantage, spending the great majority of the contest in the Montreal end and capitalizing on repeated, sloppy errors by the Impact. Toronto will host the Puerto Rico Islanders on July 28 in the opening game of the CONCACAF Champions League. Newcomer Nick Garcia put Toronto into a deep hole when he took down Impact striker Peter Byers in the box in the game's 23rd minute. Donatelli made no mistake on the ensuing penalty, calmly placing a low to the left of keeper Stefan Frei while he dove to his right. The goal put Montreal ahead 1-0, but more importantly it meant Toronto would need to score five goals to win the championship. However the visitors appeared to be up for the challenge, taking over the first half from that point onward and getting multiple chances on the Montreal goal. Toronto finally broke through in the 29th minute when Djekanovic punched out an Guevara corner right to DeRosario, whose bicycle kick made it through a crowd of Impact defenders to make it 1-1. DeRosario got his second of the match in the 39th minute with a low laser that glanced off Impact defender Elkana Mayard and past Djekanovic. The Toronto native completed his hat trick early in the second half when he was sent in alone in the 49th minute. Guevara made it 4-1 on a free kick from just outside the box in the 69th minute to set up Barrett's heroics in the 83rd minute, as he headed in a corner kick. Guevara added his second of the game in extra time to make it 6-1 Toronto.

Puerto Rico Islanders is not an average USL side.Clarke has a deeper team than anyone in MLS or USL which explains why the Islanders almost made the CCL final last year. So TFC is probably better than 10 of 11 USL sides for sure. But the question is are they better than the best USL has to offer and the one team outside Mexico with some pedigree in this new competition?

Nice win tonight. A rare road win. This moves TFC into a tie for first place in the East division.
This year's team may be inconsistent but they are undeniably better than last year. It's an exciting season so far! ![]() ![]()

I wish I had been free, and had known about this. Would it have been fun, or what?

Yeah, that struck me as odd, too... the Duke is not really a DJ kind of place, is it? More of a jukebox kind of place.

The MLS is actually doing very well compared to previous attemps at bringing soccer to North America. Hopefully some more cities will be added in the coming seasons to make it even bigger. Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary are some of the Canadian cities that I hope to see get franchises. This could even bring soccer up to the same level as the NHL eventually.
