Does anyone else realize how much every new metro system in China has to emulate the Hong Kong MTR down to the last detail? Makes you feel like China is determined to become a giant HK!!

I am still surprised that the train designers (Alstom.....are you listening?) would dare expose the door locking mechanisms within the train compartment. This design is prone to vandalism which can cripple the door.

Cave-in at subway construction site eastern China kills 2 workers
29 May 2007

SHANGHAI, China (AP) - A cave-in at a subway construction site in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing has killed two workers, state television reported Tuesday.

The accident on Monday came after the tunnel wall collapsed inward, where 13 workers were reinforcing the base that had been weakened by recent heavy rains, China Central Television said on its Web site.

Most escaped in time, but two were buried and their bodies found about eight hours later, following a search involving more than 100 rescuers, sniffer dogs and mechanical diggers.

While the effects of rain and a "complicated underground geographic structure" contributed to the collapse, experts also blamed poor safety and a rushed work schedule, the report said.

It was not immediately clear whether there would be an investigation or arrests. Calls to government offices in Nanjing, about 185 miles west of Shanghai, rang unanswered Tuesday afternoon.

The accident comes less then two months after a cave-in along a subway line being built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics that killed four construction workers.

Official media alleged the construction company attempted to cover up that accident, and police reportedly detained 10 people, including the project supervisor and the tunnel's designers.

China is undergoing a frenzy of subway construction, with more than a dozen cities recently getting approval to build new systems, joining those already in use in major metropolises such as Beijing and Shanghai. Approvals for several more are expected soon.

Yes, a lot has been learned from the success and failure of Shanghai and Guangzhou's subway systems, and design platform was set higher for Nanjing subway. I visited Nanjing in February shortly before the Lunar new year, honestly Nanjing did not leave me with a good image, but I am certainly impressed with the modern subway system.
