The historic districts of Plaka and Anafiotika
Today's athenian district of Plaka, situated on the northeast slope of the Acropolis, is the last remnant of a longterm residential history. Defined by Dionyssiou Areopagitou, Amalias, Nikis and Mitropoleos streets, with the lowrise houses of the 19th century and of the early 20th century and with a complex layout, which sometimes follows the ancient planning, contrasts boldly with the modern city that extends beyond it.
Plaka is a monument of the cultural effort of the people who lived in its place, from the prehistoric times till nowadays. For a continuous historical trail of almost 6000 years, the Acropolis rock and its slopes were inhabited by societies of people who left behind the remnants of their presence and of their activities in the form of houses, places and monuments of worship, public spaces, etc. The uninterrupted continuity of life in this area, as it is expressed by its monuments, reveals the passing of cultural time periods which preceded until we reached evolutionary to the city of the Othonian period after the liberation and to its today's final evolution. Plaka is that piece of Athens which more than any other, conserves its historical character. The character of the place which creates the dominant impression to the visitor results from: 1)The preserved form and climax of the traditional urban network, ie of the historical core of Athens 2)The presence of the archeological sites and monuments of all the periods (classical, roman, byzantine, ottoman) integrated in the urban network 3)A total of buildings with historical and architectural interest of the 19th and early 20th century buildings which coexist in harmony The buildings are mostly houses with their special characteristics being a witness of their age and of their architectural epoch of creation. Popular and Othonian houses which are dating back from 1832 till 1864 mostly, but also neoclassical and eclectic, as well as many newer buildings, compose a residential complex which presents a bigger conformity as it reaches the rock of Acropolis and more lesions at the edges of the area. Especially the Neoclassical idiom and its variants, the smal climax, the popular character of the buildings, the articulation of the architectural volumes in relation to the garden and the relations with the local configurations of the urban network are only some of the elements that need analysis and incorporation as far as it concerns modern creations. The coexistence of all these elements, monuments, buildings and of the urban constitution of the area in combination with the presence of modern life constitute the special character of the area. What a great idea!!!! A thread dedicated to Plaka, the most beautiful district in Athens! I can't never get enough of Plaka. PERFECT place to live!
![]() I also love Anafiotika, but it is a different story. I hope someday they decide to restore these picturesque tiny houses without destroying the island style atmosphere. |

A few pictures taken in Plaka region. This small building is a favorite. One day, I would like to build a house in this style. By the way, the wall lighting is commonly used by old Athenian buildings and it is called “skiada”. After a big research I managed to find in Psirri the manufacturer who still hand-makes these beautiful lamps. I bought two (smaller versions) for my living room.
