Are there any pics of the all the presidential aircraft that was at TTPP for the Summit of the Americas? Such a unique event for Trinidad and aircraft and airport enthusiasts, I hope some shutter bug was able to capitalise on this.

nunca pense que el aeropuerto fuera tan grande, no es una super estructura pero la verdad es que es bastante grande.

Piarco, Crown Point to undergo major upgrades
By Andy Johnson Senior CCN Journalist

Story Created: Jul 2, 2010 at 5:07 PM ECT

EXPANSION, upgrading and maintenance work at the Piarco and Crown Point International Airports have been identified as critical to improving passenger and air cargo services at these facilities.

Increased co-ordination among agencies responsible for airport operations has also been listed as a critical area of management oversight. This prerogative also includes proper management of airport oversight, air traffic, tourism, ground access and other issues of aviation development.

Such issues have been listed as among the most important to be addressed in the country's air transport sector by the Comprehensive National Transportation Study conducted for the Government. A final draft report of the study was submitted to the Ministry of Works and Transport in November, 2006.

Regarding the crucial airbridge service between Piarco and Crown Point, the study found that this was "one of the most vital links between islands and reliability is a concern. This issue involves capacity, service levels, ticket price and ownership/control of the operator."

Currently, the Government subsidises the cost of the airfare on the airbridge, with ticket prices set at $300 return. This is regarded as an essential service. Saying that the nation was dependent upon air service, the study also concluded that issues of operation of the national airline was vital.

On the same level, it put such other issues as encouragement of new and or improved routes and carriers, what it called Caribbean region connecting service and reliability, and connectivity with the airbridge.

Coming on top of all of these, the study said airport facility needs required urgent attention. These needs it established as those requiring expansion, upgrading and maintenance for facilities at both airports. It recommended urgent attention to these needs, if the airports were to provide for economic growth, to support tourism development and to serve as the international gateways to each island.

Submitting a list of recommendations on these fronts, the study said what was needed first was a runway system which includes two parallel 3,000 metre runways, parallel taxiways and instrument landing systems. It said property along the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway and the Eastern estate were needed to support long-range air travel demand at Piarco Airport. A second recommendation called for the development of a connector taxiway to Runway II, acquisition of property in the approach zone, and development of instrument landing system systems, to accommodate long term air travel demand at Crown Point airport as well.

The study also called for the development of general aviation airports in Couva and Rio Claro, with runways of 1,524 metres each, as well as a heliport in downtown Port of Spain. It said also that a jet fuel pipeline from Point Fortin to Piarco was required.

Consistent with the recommendations for the extension of the airport runway and other facilities at Piarco, the study said this would necessitate the relocation of the BWIA (now Caribbean Airlines) maintenance and air cargo facilities.

It also called for the development of a slew of services and facilities in what the study identified as the "south field" at Piarco, for "revenue generation purposes, to be phased in over time". Foremost among some of those recommendations, was one which called for the development of three wide-body hangars and four narrow-body hangars for a national and regional aircraft maintenance centre.

Warner lauds Civil Aviation Authority's $200m complex
By —Julien Neaves

Story Created: Sep 7, 2010 at 11:42 PM ECT

WORKS and Transport Minister Jack Warner has praised the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Aviation Authority (TTCAA) for the approximately $200 million "state-of-the-art" complex it is constructing with no assistance from Government.

"These guys didn't ask me for a 'help me'. And they don't expect any. And they were able to build this facility from their own resource and the more of us who can do this, it is better for us. I say again, I like the initiative, I like the drive and I want to commend them very highly," Warner said yesterday during a tour of the site of the Civil Aviation Complex at Caroni North Bank Road in Piarco.

He noted there were no cost overruns, it was being built within time and budget, and was "one of the wonders" of this country.

TTCAA director general Ramesh Lutchmedial described the complex as the "most modern in the world", with technology that should last for the next 15 years. He said the complex, which consists of the air navigation services, administration centre and training centre, is scheduled to be commissioned in six months. He said the complex was financed by the authority's own resources from the fees they collect for providing air navigation services.

Warner was given a tour of the complex, including the new control tower.

TTCAA air traffic management system project manager Augustus McIntosh noted that Trinidad and Tobago was one of the first five countries in the world to use the new Communication Navigation Surveillance Air Traffic Management system.

He said there will be a cost benefit, as it will allow for direct flights and also allow the authority to fit a lot more aircraft in a smaller airspace. He said currently there was one primary and one secondary surveillance radar in this country, but the new system will have several radars plugged in and there will be triple redundancies in case of failure.

Lutchmedial told Warner the TTCAA wants to be able to fix salaries without having to go to the Public Sector Negotiating Committee and the Chief Personnel Officer (CPO). He said they were losing some of their best people to other countries because they were making more outside Trinidad and Tobago. "Unless we can retain our employees, they will leave," he said.

He noted that another challenge was a job evaluation that had been completed since 2006 but was yet to be approved by the CPO. He also requested an amendment of the Civil Aviation Act 2001 to allow the TTCAA to engage in other financial activities associated with civil aviation and become self-sufficient.

Warner described the delay in the job evaluation as "scandalous" and promised to have a draft settlement arranged in 30 days. He also promised to look into the requested amendment of the act.
